Attendance: 26,399 (1,162)
This one was always going to be a tough trip for the Bluebirds but to the surprise of many, Cardiff started the better side as they dominated possession early on. Brighton sat top of the Sky Bet Championship before this fixture but early on it certainly didn’t look that way.
It took just five minutes for the deadlock to be broken and it was the visiting team who got the early goal. A superb long ball from Peter Whittingham found Scott Malone down the line, Malone composed himself before delivering a low ball across the area, Joe Mason was on hand to stab the cross home and to get his fifth goal of the campaign.
Following the goal, Cardiff continued to dominate with some quality possession play but it certainly didn’t take long for Brighton to re-gain the ascendancy. As the Seagulls increased their intensity, the Cardiff fluency died out, resulting in some serious pressure from the home side.
Sam Baldock continued to threaten for Brighton, making several runs around the Cardiff back-line but Brighton were left feeling frustrated with with Bluebirds keeper Simon Moore on fine form. Moore was called upon on several occasions during the first half but he was up for the challenge. The Cardiff number two made several good saves with the best of the lot being a superb double save to deny Baldock and Liam Rosenior in quick succession mid-way through the first half.
Despite Cardiff’s resilience, Brighton would draw level and the goal came just seven minutes before half time when Dale Stephens superbly flicked home a first time cross from the right. Stephen’s could not have found the bottom corner any better with his sweeping effort, beating Moore at the far post. A deserved leveller for the home side.
Brighton were to come close again before half time when Seagull’s top scorer Tomer Hemed was afforded too much space by the Cardiff back four. Hemed created himself yards of space to the right of the goal but he couldn’t beat the tight angle, hitting the side netting on the near side. Hemed has already scored five league goals this season so there is no doubt the travelling Cardiff fans were relieved to see the ball flash wide of the post.
The teams went into the break level with a goal each but there’s no doubt that it was the ‘league toppers’ who were on top at the AMEX Stadium and that was to continue into the second period. It was more of the same in the second half as Brighton continued their pressure, flashing more and more crosses across the face of the Cardiff goal.
Brighton dominated the second half for a good twenty minutes but nothing was to come of their attempts. Cardiff full-back Fabio Da Silva was very lucky to evade a second yellow card in the second period but he will be missing the Bluebird’s next fixture regardless after picking up one to many yellow cards.
Mid-way through the second half, the game started to become very open with both teams going for the goal. Even the officials struggled to keep up with both teams rushing end-to-end for at least ten-fifteen minutes.
Cardiff were to get a golden chance late-on when Sammy Ameobi was put through on goal, the Newcastle loanee rounded the keeper before being denied by a clearance off the line. The fast-paced winger was unlucky to be denied after doing well to find the target despite the tight angle.
As the game neared a close, Brighton predictably re-gained control of the match once more and deservedly, they were to get just one more chance and what a golden chance it was. A flash ball across the area left the Cardiff back-line standing, creating a tap-in opportunity at the back post for Gordon Greer. Greer made the desperate lunge toward the ball but despite having an open goal in front of him he bundled the ball wide of the right-hand post. The golden chance Brighton had been waiting for was spurned and the traveling Cardiff fans could breath one last sigh of relief.
The game come to a close with the teams level but it’s the home side who will feel hard done by after thoroughly dominating the game. The Seagull’s 100% home record slips away as Cardiff go home with a massively valuable point.
Russell Slade will know that his side were very lucky in parts but when the final whistle goes, the possession statistics go out the window and the only thing that remains is the point gained. The Bluebird’s were poor in parts, giving the ball away needlessly in many instances but the point they take home gives them cause for optimism going into the international break.
Man of the Match- Simon Moore
Overall, it wasn’t a performance to remember for Cardiff with some significantly poor performances from the likes of Kenwyne Jones and Fabio. Simon Moore was, in many ways, the knight in shining armour (especially in the first half) making some fantastic saves at crucial times to keep Cardiff in the game.
The well-taken Brighton goal aside, Sean Morrison and Matthew Connolly played reasonably well with most of the mistakes coming from the full-back positions, the centre-half pairings remained strong and made several superb clearances and tackles. Moore certainly takes man of the match though, he has his critics but it was a performance which will give Russell Slade something to think about with David Marshall returning from suspension after the international break.
