Younger fans might only remember Bobby Zamora from his spells at Spurs, West Ham, Fulham and QPR. But as a young Brighton striker he terrorised the Bluebirds several times

Veteran striker Bobby Zamora is back with the Seagulls and ready to haunt the Bluebirds again.

More than a decade after Zamora led Brighton to successive Football League titles, leaving Cardiff City in the shade each time, he is back with the south coast club.

And Zamora, who fired more than 60 goals in two seasons for Brighton before going on to play for Tottenham, West Ham, Fulham and QPR, says he’s ready to take on Russell Slade’s team in this Saturday’s Championship clash in Sussex.

Leaders Brighton have a 100 per cent home record, having beaten Nottingham Forest, Blackburn, Hull and Rotherham at the Amex, and Zamora, who won two England caps, said: “We’re at home (against Cardiff) and we’ve been playing great at home.

“We are looking forward to earning a win or a point at least and then we’ll enjoy the international break.”

Zamora, 34, made his first start for the club for 12 years at Bolton last weekend, having returned to the club on a free transfer from Queens Park Rangers this season.

Zamora was Brighton’s key striker with 31 goals in total when they won the League Two title, with Cardiff runners-up, during 2000-01.

The following season he went one better, scoring 32 goals as Brighton won the League One title, while the Bluebirds qualified for the play-offs and lost against Stoke City in the semi-finals.

In both seasons Zamora scored the only goal in 1-0 wins against Cardiff at their old Withdean Stadium home.

In those days Robert Earnshaw was Cardiff’s own sharpshooter, netting 40 goals over the two seasons and the two players were keen rivals.

Zamora was signed by Spurs in a £1.5m transfer, but had a miserable time in the Premier Division, making only 18 appearances and scoring one goal before being swapped for West Ham’s Jermain Defoe.
