Ex-Manchester United striker Federico Macheda at a 'massive crossroads' in career - Cardiff City boss Slade

Macheda, 24, is still seven weeks off a first-team return having needed to return to the specialist following surgery to repair a disc injury

Federico Macheda

Russell Slade has revealed Cardiff City were forced to ask Manchester United for help find a cure for Federico Macheda’s injury problems.

Macheda hit eight goals in 25 appearances last term.

But the Bluebirds boss has insisted the striker will have no more excuses once he returns fit from his back operation, backing the Italian ace to come through “a career crossroads”.

Macheda, 24, is still seven weeks off a first-team return having needed to return to the specialist following surgery to repair a disc injury. It has been an issue that has plagued the front man for years, with Slade revealing the club asked former club for Old Trafford medical records to solve the problem.

Yet Slade now expects the marksman to make a full recovery, telling Macheda it will then be down to him.

He said: “We delved into notes from Manchester United and researched it. There were little bits that had gradually built up over time where scans had shown disc problems. Eventually it became too much and we had to do something about it.

“It is something that has plagued him on and off for a while. Clearly, it became more than just a little irritation. He has had to go in for maintenance and massages to try and get him right.

“Now we are looking for a full recovery with no recurrence of that. It should allow him to get some continuity in his progress because we were having to leave him out when he got sore – but he can now get fitter and stronger and more confident. That will allow us to get him on the pitch and he’ll be an asset.”

Macheda hit eight goals in 25 appearances last term, and Slade added: “He is at a massive crossroads in his career and he knows that. We have done something about the problem he had, now it’s down to him.

"We need a little bit of ownership from him to get back on his game. There will be no excuses if he comes back fully fit from this but he has it within him to achieve that. He’s at the point where he will role up his sleeves and come back – maybe even a better player than he was before.”

Having Turner back would be a big plus, however Macheda I am not really bothered about as we have some good striking options at the moment providing everyone stays fit

I thought you said he was getting closer to fitness and could have even been on the bench Annis?
