' Should David Marshall be relieved of the Cardiff City captaincy? '

Should David Marshall be relieved of the Cardiff captaincy?
People have very definite ideas of what a captain should be.
It’s blood and guts, leading by example in the mould of Roy Keane or John Terry.
But not everyone has a player like that, so then what do you do?
It usually ends up falling to the best player, the most senior player or the longest-serving member of the squad.
Cardiff’s captain is Marshall and that ticks a number of boxes.
David Marshall has saved Cardiff City many times
He can certainly lay claim to being Cardiff’s best player and arguably their most important.
Along with Bruno Manga, he’s the club’s most valuable asset, with the club fending off West Brom’s advances in the summer.
He is also one of the longest-serving players, as one of the few remaining Dave Jones signings.
But he’s not exactly excelling in the role at present.
In the final game of last season, Marshall was dismissed late in the second half for putting his head in the face of Nottingham Forest defender Jamaal Lascelles.
Cardiff managed to hold out to secure a 2-1 away, but Marshall’s misdemeanour resulted in a suspension carried over to the current season and he sat out the first three games of the season.
A couple of weeks ago, he had another rush of blood to the head and kicked out at Rotherham’s Matt Derbyshire, who was preventing him from releasing the ball quickly.
This time, he also conceded a penalty in the process, which was duly converted and Cardiff lost the game, having played more than half the game with 10 men.
The obvious question no one seems to be asking is whether these incidents should result in him being relieved of the Cardiff captaincy.
Maybe this is due to not wanting to rock the boat, with Cardiff making a better than expected start to the new campaign.
Maybe this is because people already consider him unsettled, after his dalliance with the Baggies.
But the fact remains that he has let Cardiff down twice now.
That would be bad enough under normal circumstances, but is even worse when you are the captain and designated leader on the pitch.
Marshall has plenty of credit in the bank and Cardiff are very lucky to have him in the second tier, but maybe the captaincy just isn’t a great fit at present.
How many chances should he get before any action is taken?
It’s not like he mistimed a dive and took out an opponent, he lost his temper and lashed out. Twice!
In many respects, Marshall is a model professional and great example to the rest of the squad.
He dealt with the recent transfer speculation respectfully, with good grace and didn’t try to engineer a move like so many of his contemporaries have.
But if you assign a designated penalty taker and he keeps missing, eventually you have to seriously consider giving someone else the responsibility.
Regardless of these circumstances, there are plenty of people that think a goalkeeper shouldn’t be considered for the captaincy in the first place.
They are too far away from the cut and thrust of the game to influence proceedings and make their mark. But I don’t necessarily subscribe to that school of thought.
They have a great view of the game unfolding in front of them and plenty of time to analyse proceedings.
It’s also worked just fine for Hugo Lloris, Gianluigi Buffon and Iker Casillas, to name but a few.
There is also the not insignificant matter of a lack of suitable alternatives in the current Cardiff squad. In many respects, Peter Whittingham performs the role of captain. He is the one that takes control on the field and everything goes through him, but he has occupied the role on many occasions over the years and seems to have been considered too timid.
Sean Morrison is a contender
Sean Morrison is captain material, but many, myself included, think that he shouldn’t even be a guaranteed starter, with Manga set to return to the side sooner rather than later and probably in place of Matthew Connolly instead. Manga is another option while Aron Gunnarsson has just led Iceland to their first ever competitive tournament, but he is very much on the periphery at present.
Personally, I would like to see Connolly given the chance to lead the side. He remains criminally underrated and as already mentioned, is likely to step aside for Manga, but he has been around the club for long enough to understand the expectations of the role at Cardiff and leads by example as much as anyone in the current team.
Matt Connolly would make a good captain
But what remains clear is that until Cardiff sign someone like Kevin Nolan, there is no outstanding, unanimous choice.
There has been a leadership void ever since Mark Hudson was unceremoniously shown the door by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Russell Slade has previously spoken out about the rarity and value of natural leaders.
He is clearly a big fan of Marshall and was adamant that Scotland’s No.1 would not be leaving during the transfer window.
But in lieu of Marshall’s recent dismissal, he did offer a warning regarding any future indiscretions.
“He’s had some criticism and you can see why people think (the West Brom move) had an impact by putting two and two together and assuming he’s disgruntled, but it’s not the case,” Slade claimed.
“It didn’t have any part in his reaction. David is very professional, he’s a good man and a good leader but this is a warning that he needs to be careful.”
Marshall has since seen his ban reduced from three games to two after the club made an appeal on his behalf, which was rather fortunate for an act of petulance.
But he clearly needs to heed Slade’s warning and try to control the frenzy with which he sometimes tries to distribute the ball, as he is likely to be targeted by opponents in future. It is unlikely that he will be afforded a third strike.

Not even a question in my book - it dont really work having a captain as keeper

As much as I love David Marshall, I don't think a goalkeeper being the captain works either.
Ben Turner, Peter Whittingham or Lee Peltier

Marshall Captain. Simples.
He's a keeper.

Bit concerned about Marshall's temperament at certain times, but I never really like the idea of a goalkeeper as captain, so I think it would be good to appoint an outfield player. Preferably someone who's done it before, but I would still have him as Club Captain.

Silly appointment in the first place.

I love Marshall as a player and although I'm not keen on goalkeepers as captain I cannot fault the way he has performed his duties so far
I don't think he deserved all the flak he had for his sending off
That red card he received was harsh and if Slade had kept his mouth shut and supported his goalkeeper he would have had his red card rescinded
Marshall is worth at least 10 points a season with his performances and I woul rate him in the top ten goalkeepers in the country
As far as I'm concerned he should be captain
I would also have Manga to replace Connelly at centre back
You should always play the your best players if fit

Love Marshall and what he has done for Cardiff City FC and really don't see the issue with a keeper being Captain and if you actually look at the 'Captain's Role' in modern football, it isn't much more than that of a ceremonial one!
There should be eleven 'leaders' on the pitch and the likes of Morrison, Connolly and Whitts are more than capable of having their say without the need for an armband!
Captain Marshall for me!

Personally I am not a fan of the keeper being captain as they are not in the thick of it mainly, however they can see the whole pitch and should read the game well and interpret this to the larders in front if him..
I must say that all this questioning IMO is bonkers and Marshall is being questioned and scrutinised for doing something stupid yet 3-4 weeks ago everyone was pleading with him to stay.. I think he's done something stupid and who doesn't but to be questioned and scrutinised like this is unfair

I honestly think that Peltier is the only likely captain who should be a regular. I'd prefer Manga to Morrison, but I don't think Manga will be picked while we're doing okay. Marshall is a better keeper when not worrying about the rest of it. So, I'd plump for Peltier in the long term.
