How Arsenal FC and Cardiff City fans have called for rugby style TMO in football after Diego Costa and David Marshall incidents

Two big incidents this week have had Cardiff City and Arsenal fans calling for a TMO to be brought into football. Here we take a look

Would a rugby-style TMO have saved Cardiff City on Saturday?

While Diego Costa and Gabriel have dominated the football headlines for their battles in the big London derby between Chelsea and Arsenal frustrated Cardiff City fans have seen a similar saga play out, involving their captain David Marshall.

On Saturday afternoon, while Costa and Gabriel were battling it out at Stamford Bridge, Marshall was sat in the dressing room, already sent off for kicking out at Rotherham striker Matt Derbyshire.

In the days that have followed, Marshall has seen his three-game ban reduced to two, while the Arsenal defender's ban has been completely rescinded.

Costa, on the other hand, has been given a subsequent three-game ban for putting his hands on Laurent Koscielny's face before barging him to the ground.

Starting the debate
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is still not happy though, as, like Cardiff, his team had to play 45 minutes with 10-men.

The angry Frenchman said: "Instead of us playing 11 against 10, we played 10 against 11.

Arsene Wenger was livid with Gabriel's red card
"It just shows that they decided after the game what should have happened during the game."

These sentiments have raised a groundswell of calls for TV match officials in football to ensure the big decisions are made correctly.

And Bluebirds fans have been getting stuck into the same debate on the Cardiff City Online Facebook page after Mike Goode posted: "So essentially, the ref screwed up and went a long way to helping us lose three points.

"Reducing the ban from three to two matches is nothing in comparison.

"OK, so Marshall shouldn't have reacted, but he did nothing wrong. Ridiculous situation.

"Football needs to to start taking a long hard look at the way rugby is being officiated… so far, in the Rugby World Cup, the way that TMOs have been working with the refs has been extremely effective.

"Football is lagging a long way behind."

Affecting the result?
Both incidents appear to have directly affected the results of the games and the teams who were subsequently vindicated both lost.

And the timing couldn't be worse as daily doses of World Cup rugby show the TMO get decision after decision correct and nobody ever disputes the eventual outcome of matches.

Time to catch up?
Football waited long enough to catch up with other sports by eventually bringing in goal line technology in 2013 but maybe now it's time to go one step further.

The rugby referees have taken their time over all the big decisions at the World Cup
Yes, the rugby refs have certainly come in for some flak for their liberal use of the video official at this World Cup.

We've seen halves of rugby take closer to an hour to complete than the usual 40 minutes, but ultimately they've got every decision right. And isn't that the most important thing?

With all the money involved, surely the stakes are simply too high now for incorrect decisions to be made and the the idea that football should celebrate its imperfection is starting to seem ridiculous.

Very good idea and should be used but what decisions are we talking about? Sending offs and penalty's OK, but if anything else that's going to spoil game regardless of right or wrong decision as will stop continuity, and more important the momentum of a team. :old:

Rugby referees get total respect as well. No back chatting rugby referees.

Bonus time for Gareth Rodgers......Get more rugby into a football slot

Rugby, cricket and american football have more breaks, i found it infuriating how often the ref now goes to the TMO in this world cup already.

Marshall and Gabriel both fouled an opponent and were sent off for retaliation because they were spotted. Derbyshire may have received a yellow on review and OK they wouldn't had had a penalty but it would still be 10 vs 11

Dark arts are there to be spotted by the ref and his assistants. I got no issues if they are pulled up on review after the game and punished, but constantly stopping the game for reviews is a non starter.

I'd love Gareth Rogers to explain how on earth David Marshall was sent off and sat in the dressing room before Gabriel got sent off. :?
