Cardiff City Vs Charlton Athletic: Match Preview

Date and Time: Saturday 26th September (15.00)

Venue: Cardiff City Stadium

Referee: Andrew Madley

The Bluebirds will be looking to get their season back on track after two consecutive defeats tainted their promising start to term. Elsewhere, Guy Luzon’s Charlton will be feeling the pressure to get their season up and running after a reasonably poor start to the campaign.

Russell Slade will have been happy with the way his side started the season but a tough week of last means that pressure is on for Cardiff this week. The South-Wales side were unbeaten until last Tuesday when despite dominating the game, they ended up on the wrong side of a 2-0 scoreline against Hull City.

Only a few days later and Cardiff were in action again but they could only manage to double the amount of losses suffered this season. A David Marshall red card in the first half meant it would be a tricky battle at Rotherham but the home side grabbed their first win of the season late on through a Matthew Connolly own goal.

Slade and his men will inevitably be looking to get back to winning ways, at home, against a struggling Charlton side. The Bluebirds will be keen to show that the promising start to the season was no fluke as they go in search of another three points. Cardiff currently sit in eighth place and only goal difference separates them from the Play-Off’s.

Meanwhile in South-East London, after a pleasing finish to the last campaign, Charlton have struggled to get their season up and running with two wins, three draws and three defeats to their name. The Addicks currently occupy fifteenth place in the Championship table.

Charlton’s last outting was in the Capital One Cup when they made the short trip to Premier League Crystal Palace. The tasty London derby finished 4-1 to the Premier League outfit with a goal from former Cardiff man Fraizer Campbell before a hat-trick from Dwight Gale (two of the goals coming from the spot.) Charlton did get a goal however and that came through Naby Sarr.

Charlton’s last fixture in the league was one of misery as they made the long trip up to Ewood Park to face Blackburn Rovers. The journey was made to feel even longer as Charlton were beaten comfortably, 3-0 the final score in that one. Jordan Rhodes hitting form for the home side grabbing a brace.

In the game previous, Charlton fans were left disappointed again with a 2-1 home defeat to Chris Powell’s Huddersfield Town. Pressure has begun to build slightly on Addicks manager Guy Luzon with his side not winning a game in four otting’s. If Charlton were to grab a win in South Wales, it would be their first away win since March, they were 3-0 winners against relegated Blackpool on that day.

Charlton were victorious when the two sides last met back in March, Federico Macheda put Cardiff in front before Sanchez Watt and Yoni Buyens scored late-on to take three points from the Cardiff City Stadium. On another interesting note, Cardiff haven’t beaten Charlton in their last five attempts.
