Twenty eight people were arrested but major disorder was avoided at the first Aston Villa against Birmingham City derby in four years.

Aston Villa v Birmingham City - Villa Park

The most serious incident of the evening was when several windows were smashed at the Manor Tavern Pub in Portland Street, which resulted in one person suffering a minor head injury.

There were reports today of missiles being thrown in the area surrounding the ground as families made their way to the 7.45pm Villa Park game, which the home side won 1-0.

But today p0lice praised the operation and said the night had passed off without any major disorder.

How the arrests broke down
Three men have been charged: Glenn Browne, 34, a finance clerk from Redditch and Tony Lightwood, 35 a courier from Solihull were both charged with using threatening words or behaviour. They have both been bailed to appear at Birmingham Magistrates Court next month.
Factory worker Daniel Hawkins, 32 from Birmingham, was charged with invading the pitch and will appear before the same court on October 7.
Two men, aged 38 and 44, were given instant fines for being drunk and disorderly. A 20-year-old man was cautioned for a public order offence. Two men, aged 23 and 31, were released without charge.
A 27-year-old man arrested on suspicion of breaching a football banning order was released without charge.
A 25-year-old Solihull man was being questioned today over allegations of assault and a 31-year-old man is in custody on suspicion of a public order offence.

Four other men were arrested by British Transport Police on suspicion of assault, breaching a banning order and two for public order offences.
After the game, road closures were in place to keep the two sets of fans separate as they headed towards train stations to make their way home.

Chief Superintendent Steve Graham, from West Midlands Police, said: “This was always going to be a challenging fixture for us.

"There's the history between Aston Villa and Birmingham City and the fact they hadn’t faced each other in some time.

“It is of course disappointing that any disorder broke out during the course of the evening and we reacted quickly to arrest several people, in connection with the damage caused to the Manor Tavern Pub.

“However, the aim of our operation was to engage with fans in the city centre and in the vicinity of the ground to ensure supporters were able to enjoy the evening in safety.

“We had put together a significant policing plan which was based on intelligence gathered before the game.

"I’m pleased that the vast majority of fans behaved well and contributed to an excellent atmosphere at the match.

Crowd trouble at Morton v Motherwell game

Trouble flared in the away section of the ground during extra time

Police are investigating crowd trouble at Tuesday night's game between Morton and Motherwell which saw two officers hurt and two men arrested.

The Scottish League Cup game was halted in extra time amid trouble in the "wee Dublin end", which housed away fans, at Cappielow Park, Greenock.

A male and female officer suffered minor injuries during the incident.

Police have asked anyone with footage of the incident to contact them. Morton won the match 3-2 after extra time.
Ch Insp Elliot Brown, area commander for Inverclyde, said the incident was reported at 21:45.
Officers injured
"Additional officers attended and assisted, and two officers received minor injuries," he said.
"Two men were arrested in connection with the disturbance and are subject of a report to the procurator fiscal.
"Inquiries are continuing today to find out the exact circumstances surrounding the incident and I would ask anyone with information or footage that will help officers establish what happened to contact Police Scotland."
A female officer was taken to the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley where she was treated for a hand injury then later released.
A male officer received an injury to his back but did not require treatment.
Ch Insp Brown added: "We take incidents of this nature extremely seriously.
"We are fully investigating and pursuing all lines of inquiry to find out exactly what happened and how these officers were injured.
"The safety of everyone attending football matches - including our officers - is a priority for us and violence and disorder will not be tolerated."
