' WHAT DO CARDIFF CITY FANS WANT? '

Do Cardiff City fans want goal music? What about cardboard clappers, drums, megaphones or players ringing the fans?

22/09/15

BY TERRY PHILLIPS

After last night's Cardiff City fans meeting, Terry Phillips looks through the best and the worst of the ideas

1: Season ticket loyalty scheme :ayatollah:
Young fan Sam Thomas came up with a cracking idea. Fans who buy a season ticket for 5/10/15 consecutive years would qualify for a discount of, say, five per cent or even 10 per cent.

The scheme couldn’t really be backdated, but it has potential going forward.

Rating: Great idea looking forward. Well done Sam.

2: Bluebirds players ringing supporters :ayatollah:
Enlisting players to call fans might just work. The idea was for players to each make contact with season ticket holders and/or those who have not renewed.

The key will be to persuade players to get involved, but if that is possible it surely can’t fail.

Fans who have a season ticket could be offered another free to bring a friend on a one-off basis, while those who had decided not to buy again could be invited to a match.

“Just imagine taking a call from David Marshall,” said Alm. “That would be fantastic for anybody who is a Cardiff City fan at heart.”

Rating: May be difficult persuading players to get involved, but some may be willing. Their focus has to be on the pitch, but during international breaks it may work.

3: City players visiting fans around Cardiff and all around the valleys :ayatollah:
To be fair, the first team squad get through a lot of work in the community. I’m told Cardiff players do more fans events around their club area than virtually any other club in the Premier League or Football club.

I know they do a lot, but school visits could prove invaluable. Perhaps those visits could be backed up by stadium visits.

Rating: Cracking idea. Children would love to see Cardiff players out and about in schools. Send them throughout Cardiff, deep into the valleys and let everybody know about the visits.

4: Flags, drums and megaphones :ayatollah:
New club flags are already being made – and Vince Alm is looking for fans willing to play drums. He has even volunteered to beat a drum himself if needs be.

Two ideas put forward – drums or a brass band.

The drums took it – big drums, little drums, all sorts of drums could be involved.

Flag designs have been put forward and hopefully some will be ready for the match against Bristol City.

What about a fan using a megaphone to whip up the passion and fire up the atmosphere. Volunteers needed.

Rating: Let’s get the CCS rocking – and these ideas are just the job.

5: New season ticket categories :ayatollah:
Wayne Nash, City’s head of operations, revealed that season tickets for midweek matches only and Saturdays have been discussed within the club.

The club feel it could be a positive move, perhaps for next season, and fans around the room agreed.

There was also a ‘kids for a quid’ suggestion.

Rating: Not sure about this, but it’s worth the research to see if there is a need for extra season ticket categories.

6: Fan zone :ayatollah:
There was a lot of backing for a fans zone outside the stadium and, maybe in the future, a supporters bar where they could gather before and after games.

Many go to Canton Rugby Club or into pubs near the stadium before kick-off and long-time fan Lee Beames said: “We our own bar or, at least, a fans zone where we can get together and talk about our team.

“Wherever you go club supporters have their own bar and it’s always busy. We don’t have that here. Why not?”

Former Bluebirds matches could be shown on a big screen in the zone.

Drinks are subsidised in the Eddie May Bar in the main stand if a big match is being shown on television. There was a suggestion that £2.50 a pint would be a good price to attract fans.

Rating: A must. Bring the fans together, provide beer at reasonable prices and get them talking about the Bluebirds.

7: Goal music :ayatollah:
Alm says: “Good goal music works. When it is done properly, it makes a difference.

“The majority of grounds are playing goal music.”

8: Bluebirds banners :ayatollah:
The Supporters Club are putting money in to providing banners and Alm said: “We are doing that to get things started, it’s something our members want.”

The meeting decided big is beautiful and the thought was put forward: “If you are going to have a banner we must look on a big, big scale.

“They must be long and clearly show the club’s identity.”

A fan talked about going abroad to matches and seeing how home fans ‘dress’ their end with banners.

Rating: An idea with potential – if the banners are good. It’s great to be proud of your club’s identity and the banners must show that.

9: New Bluebirds songs :ayatollah:
A lead group of fans is being formed to come up with new songs.

This is a key project of Alm, who will head up the group. The first meeting will be before this Saturday’s home match against Charlton Athletic.

“We should be looking at cheesy music which has been around for years and seeing if we can come up with Bluebirds songs to go with it,” said Alm.

“I’d love to see kids who are passionate about their club and full of ideas coming forward. Volunteers are needed.”

Anybody interested in being part of a working group should ring Alm on 07814779441.

All welcome.

Rating: Great idea, particularly getting young fans involved in coming up with songs.

10: The Canton End singing section :ayatollah:
Standing is allowed in an area of the stadium where the singing section gather.

It was suggested the group could be named, perhaps the ‘Cardiff Ultras’.

More ideas needed on this one.

Rating: Can’t see this one making too much difference.

11: Has Men of Harlech had its day? :ayatollah:
That is played before the teams come out for kick-off. Is a new song needed? The new club announcers, Mark Johncock and Huw Day, will be a part of this discussion.

Rating: Personally, I like Men of Harlech. Stick with it.

12: Cardboard clappers :ayatollah:
Rated a very good idea, but only for the Family Stand. There was strong backing for clappers to be made available for families.

Some great ideas here that definitely could go to improving the atmosphere.

I like the idea of drums, banners and clapper will really add to the atmosphere and experience, I know Leicester for example have drums and clappers made the noise in the stadium come alive.

I'm not sure on the goal music tbh, 50/50, if its got a good fast paced beat to it then maybe.

also would be nice to hear a few new songs going around, but I am fairly happy with the ones we regularly sing now.

I have the same feeling. Some top rated ideas especially the Season Ticket Loyalty Scheme although waiting 5 years is not really going to help short term. May be benefits starting after 2 years?

Also the players phoning those who have not renewed. Great idea joining the club with its fan base.

Goal Music absolutely no!

I'm really not a fan of goal music , the only goal music I thought wasn't to bad was in the Euros a few years ago when they used a version of Seven Nation Army by The White Stripes

We we're if got new owner? Same as with changing ends new owner see it differently! But as we are refering to the here and now its been stated numerous times not swapping! And also be hard for new owner to do so as police objections could stop it happening anyway! So not sure of the revalance of your response?

Some good ideas and some terrible ones, the worst for me the name 'cardiff ultras'... We're not ultras, do they even know what f*cking ultras are? It will become a laughing stock if they try and become ultras.
