MK Dons have completed the signing of former Cardiff City forward Nicky Maynard on a one-year-contract.

The 28-year-old has agreed a deal with the Dons delighted to have seen off competition from fellow Championship side Bolton Wanderers.

He joins ex-Reading man Simon Church and Southampton loanee Sam Gallagher as strikers in Karl Robinson’s squad after being released by the Bluesbirds in the summer.

The pair have so far scored just one goal between them this season with Church grabbing his first in the 2-1 defeat against Leeds United.

Robinson will be hoping Maynard produces the form from earlier in his career after only scoring three times in 26 appearances for Cardiff.

The forward’s last goal came in a 1-0 win over Wigan Athletic in the Championship way back on August 19, 2014.

He could make his debut for the Dons in tomorrow night’s Capital One Cup third round tie against Premier League side Southampton at stadium mk.

Maynard was released by current City boss Russell Slade last summer, while his last Championship start and goal for the club were more than a year ago.

Maynard has scored 92 goals in 259 appearances over his career, for Crewe, Bristol City, West Ham, Cardiff and Wigan.

He has commanded almost £6.5m in transfer fees with Cardiff (£2.5m), Bristol City (£2.25m) and West Ham (£1.65m) the big spenders.

“I’m really pleased we have got him,” said Dons manager Karl Robinson.

“The fans will be pleased that we can bring players of his quality through the door.

“With Nicky we were firm from the word go with what we could offer and initially it was a shock for him and his people.

“They had to go away and think about it but I’m delighted he’s decided to sign.”

MK Dons are expected to include Maynard in their squad for tonight’s (Wednesday) Capital One Cup home tie against Southampton.
