' DAVID MARSHALL & THE REF '

Why the ref was wrong :ayatollah:

Derbyshire’s tug on Marshall, as the ‘keeper looked to release the ball was a blatant foul, no question. It emerged later the official had not even seen it. But, with the benefit of watching replays I admit, one can clearly see Marshall imploring the ref to consult his assistant on the far side who one can only assume had seen Derbyshire’s original foul.

Mr Hill does no such thing and is quick to reach for his pocket. A free-kick should have been awarded to Cardiff which would have meant no penalty could be given to the hosts.

Now, as for Marshall’s ‘kick,’ which the referee obviously did see, well, that was daft from the Cardiff man and rather petulant especially coming not so long after his sending-off for a similar incident at Nottingham Forest in the final game of last season.

But, again on reflection, it was hardly the crime of the century, it was a little flick of the boot that barely made contact with Derbyshire and was surely prompted by being so clearly and cynically fouled by the Rotherham striker himself.

Deserved to go :ayatollah:

Sure, Marshall probably deserved to go, but all this abuse of the shot-stopper, the mad insistence by some that he should have been sold in the summer to West Brom or he should now go in January is all a little hysterical and uncalled for.

I acknowledge this is all hypocrisy from me, having condemned the guy myself, but, as I say, on reflection, while the punishment might have fitted the crime, the fall out in regard to Marshall was heavy-handed, over the top and unnecessary.

It was a long weekend and I have to contend that hindsight really is a wonderful thing.

Both were wrong.

The club should appeal. The correct decision should've been a booking for both players and, as Derbyshire's was the initial foul, a free kick to us. I can't believe that Slade saw it as justified.

Not excessive force. Only a reaction. Hardly touched him. Ridiculous decision.

Intent is all that's required to get you sent off! To me Marshall has a weakness when it comes to forwards hassling him, it happened on numerous occasions last season he allowed forwards to intimidate him! Why on earth didn't he use a bit of sense Saturday and fall over when shirt pulled that would been end of problem? :old:

Totally agree. If Marshall had pushed Derbyshire in the chest, he would have been only booked as "by the letter of the law", only striking an opponents face is classed as a straight red. So how anyone can think Marshall's little flick of his left foot can justify a sending off is beyond me! It was a tiny flick which I don't even think made contact, not a proper kick! Incredible decision! Derbyshire's offense was a lot worse than Marshall's.

I may be wrong but I think tis mind set of Marshall's may have been bought about by the incident with Eto in the premier league. He's now so wound up every time a forward tries illegally to get the ball his head goes. The referee's need to clamp down on this interference with GK, the small tug on Marsh as he's about to launch it could have put him off balance and caused injury. I don't condone his retaliation but feel the appraisal of this ref should clearly show he wasn't communicating with his other officials and missed a blatent foul.

The 'excessive force' bit does.
As that is the law.

However you are also right that contact doesn't matter, intent to injure is what is considered.

No complaints with the red card, however clearly a foul on Marshall prior to that. Regardless, if you kick out then you deserve to walk.
