'David Marshall should be ashamed of himself' Cardiff City fans lay into captain after 'stupid' red-card

David Marshall's sending off at Rotherham has angered Bluebirds fans and the captain is being blamed for his team's 2-1 defeat on social media

Cardiff City captain David Marshall has been blamed by furious fans for the defeat at Rotherham - after his 'stupid' red-card left his team-mates battling on with 10-men.

Marshall's moment of madness came on the stroke of half time as he kicked out at Millers' striker Matt Derbyshire inside the box.

He was immediately red carded and Vadis Odjidja-Ofoe slotted the penalty.

The Bluebirds fought back to 1-1 at the break but were ultimately undone by a last-gasp own-goal scored by Matt Connolly.

Moments after Marshall's shock lash out, supporters took to social media to share their rage and question whether he should still be captain.

Marshall was sent off at Nottingham Forest on the final day of last season, ruling him out of the first three games of this season.

He is now set to miss the games against Charlton, Brighton and Preston in the coming weeks, after being ordered off for violent conduct.

Manager Russell Slade admitted his captain should have been sent-off, even though he contested whether a penalty should have been awarded.

Refusing to offer any sympathy, Slade said: “Marshall left the 10 out there in a difficult position and he will regret that.

"He is a good man, good professional, but sometimes a player sees red mist."

Well I don't know why you are saying that. Everyone I spoke to at the game felt the same.

As this is his second sending off in a short time, both being reckless, I hope he does get fined and the money used to compensate the away fans.

Strange how these comments are always from the ones that don't go to the games...

The huge outcry here is partly to do with the fact that Marshall is such a great player. If he was a mediocre midfielder, of course there would be anger, but if seems to be way out of perspective. 2 incidents recently point to something not being quite right behind the scenes. He seems to be showing frustration on a new scale not seen before.

Maybe he regrets not having jumped ship some time ago when his stock was at an all-time high. Who knows?

He needs these games off now to sort his head out. He should still be capable of game winning stops like he did during the promoted season (probably more saves than any other keeper that year).

100% agree Plymouth! Just pot stirrers and scapegoat hunters. I've had stick on here today for speaking my mind. No way should Marshall be blamed totally. He made a mistake. The decisions of the ref are questionable too.

Just watched the highlights of the match, I'm sorry but if anyone thinks that is a sending off offence, then you need to go to specsavers, Slade included, no way on this earth is that a red card, it should be a free kick to Cardiff. Whether Marshall made contact or not you cannot aim a kick or raise your hands these days,he should know that. To be quite honest I can understand why the referee gave a penalty, he can't send a player off then not penalise the team. I like Marshall but you have to wonder whether he should still remain captain,and yes I think he should be fined. How anyone can say he didn't cause us to drop points is unbelieveable,he certainly didn't help though the other 10 players were unlucky to lose to a late deflected own goal after all their gallant work.
