' Rotherham United 2-1 Cardiff City report: David Marshall madness costs Bluebirds - 90 minutes in 90 seconds '

By Terry Phillips

19/09/15

10-man Cardiff City were beaten at bottom placed Rotherham after captain David Marshall was sent off shortly before half time

It was heartbreak for Cardiff City as a last-gasp own goal downed them after holding out for 45 minutes with 10-men, having fought back from behind, against bottom placed Rotherham.

THE STORY OF THE GAME :ayatollah:
Rotherham broke Cardiff City's hearts with a last-gasp winner, credited to Emmanuel Ledesma, which looked more like a Matt Connolly own-goal.

The 10-man Bluebirds would have settled for a point to take them back into the top six after Peter Whittingham's penalty had cancelled out the one scored by Vadis Odjidja-Ofoe just moments earlier.

The scrappy first half ended at a frantic pace as David Marshall suffered a rush of blood and kicked out after being pulled back by Rotherham striker Matt Derbyshire. He was sent off and the Bluebirds were up against it from then on.

WAS IT A SENDING OFF? :ayatollah:
Okay, there didn’t appear to be contact, but Marshall certainly flicked out a boot at Derbyshire and earned his red card.

THE TEAMSHEETS :ayatollah:
Both teams made two changes for this game. Russell Slade called in Sammy Ameobi and Craig Noone for this one with Kenwyne Jones and Anthony Pilkington on the bench.

Rotherham United 4-4-1-1: L Camp, L Buxton, J Mattock, D Collins (capt), J Clarke-Harris, F Rawson, J Newell, T Andreu (E Ledesma 68), V Odidja-Ofoe, M Derbyshire (C Maguire 82), R Smallwood. Subs not used: A Collin, D Ward, P Green, G Halford, G Ward.

Cardiff City 4-4-2: D Marshall (capt), L Peltier, S Morrison, M Connolly, S Malone, C Noone, K Dikgacoi, P Whittingham, J Ralls, J Mason (S Moore 42), S Ameobi (A Revell 86). Subs not used: S Moore (gk), B Manga, A Pilkington, A Gunnarsson, S Malone.

THE GOALS :ayatollah:
43 min: Rotherham 1-0, Vadis Odjidja-Ofoe

David Marshall conceded a penalty, was sent off and Rotherham scored.

It was a moment of stupidity which was completely out of character for Marshall. He had the ball in his hands and tried to run past Matt Derbyshire and throw upfield.

The Rotherham man clearly dragged him back with an arm and Marshall kicked out. There didn’t appear to be contact, but Marshall did flick a boot at Derbyshire’s leg.

Referee Keith Hill ignored Derbyshire’s action and did not book him, but showed the red to Marshall.

Rotherham had to wait while sub goalie Simon Moore got stripped and went on with Joe Mason going off but Vadis Odjidja-Ofoe took the penalty and scored.

Fabio set off on a run down the left, beat a defender and surged into the penalty area. Home defender Farrend Rawson couldn’t stop the City man and decided to pull him back.

Fabio went down and referee Hill awarded Cardiff a spot-kick. Peter Whittingham stepped up to smash the penalty home.

90+3: Rotherham 2-1, Matt Connolly (own goal)

Cardiff fought like tigers to earn a draw with 10 men, but all their work was wasted when Chris Maguire fired the ball towards Cardiff’s goal. It deflected off Connolly and just inside the near post.

Rotherham’s announcer gave the goal to Emmanuel Ledesma, but it was clearly an own goal.

Yes he did the same at Forest last game of the season earning him a 3 match suspension. Now he faces another 3 match suspension meaning he misses 6 of our 1st 11 games.

If I recall right he throttles Steve Gerrard at Forest to a few seasons ago. So I would not say it is out of character for him. Its times like this I wish we would have taken the £5m from WBA.

FAO bakedalaska, I am a frequent viewer of this board, admittedly don't post a lot, have always admired your straight opinions but your view and subsequent witch hunt of Marshall on what is absolutely something of nothing is shocking. Watch the replay, it is not a red card offence, he has not kicked out, I do not understand your vitriol towards Marshall, I feel like I'm in the minority but I can see nothing ng wrong in what he did.

Agree Marshall is a great goalie, it should have been a free kick to us but he did kick out which now adays you can't do so he had to go :ayatollah:

Hi,

I actually welcome opinions be it good or bad. Let me explain my "vitriol"" towards Marshall. Now I have never said anything against the guy before now. However and sometimes in life people do things that turn others against them. I'm afraid this is one of those cases. This was not the first time Marshall had acted this way lately although this time was not as severe as last time. The thing is he did react and adding to the crime he is mean't to be the club captain. Like it or not but privilege comes ith the rank and so does responsibility of which Marshall has failed us all.

Lets go further. Marshall now has made himself available for only half the present season through his own recklessness. How would you feel if you employed someone who you paid good money for only to work at half pace? In the supporters case paid an ST for to see a team put put their best team on the day. Putting out your best team on the day can only happen if all your players are available. Yes some players are not available and this is usually down to no fault of there own but this does not apply to Marshall.
