Matthew Connolly believes an unbeaten start to the season and three league wins on the bounce mean Bluebirds boss Slade should be appreciated more by supporters.

" The manager deserves praise. It was not easy for him,” said Connolly.

Cardiff City defender Matthew Connolly believes it is time to start singing the praises of Bluebirds’ boss Russell Slade.

Cardiff surged to second in the Championship with a comfortable 2-0 win over Huddersfield on the weekend making it three league wins on the bounce in the process.

The unbeaten start to their league campaign is a personal triumph for Slade who has received his fair share of criticism since leaving Leyton Orient to take over in the Welsh capital almost a year ago.

Connolly, who has been in fine form himself in the heart of defence, said it was time to stop the sniping, crediting Slade with the great start and for bringing a feelgood factor back to the Bluebirds’ dressing room.

“The manager deserves praise. It was not easy for him,” said Connolly.

"Many people raised their eyebrows when he got the job in the first place. It takes time to get going."

Connolly added: “He had a massive squad, I feel he has done well to trim that down and to keep players too.

"Keeping David Marshall and Kenwyne Jones has been huge for us. The manager deserves a lot of praise.

"He’s great to work with and a great guy too, he’s really easy to talk to. The training is going well and the matches too.

"We all know our jobs now. Last year it was all about getting used to it, but now we know what we are doing.

“The group is happier this term. The lads play golf together in the afternoons, people go to the cinema and for dinner. We are like a small group, but there is quality here and we are all really close.

“There’s a good feeling in the dressing room definitely. If you’d ask people before I don’t think people would have expected the start we've had, but we’ve got a quiet belief and a great team spirit.”

On the personal front Connolly, so often the Bluebirds’ fall guy in the past, is enjoying a great season so far, having played every second of every game the Bluebirds have had.

He has struck up a good partnership with Sean Morrison and, despite the return from injury of star man Bruno Manga, Slade has decided to keep faith with his original centre-halves who kept another clean-sheet against the Terriers.

Connolly said he was a fan of Manga and revealed how the Gabon international was pushing him and Morrison to even greater heights in training.

“When you don’t lose games it becomes very difficult to change the team. It’s up to the manager in the end,” added Connolly.

“I’m a massive fan of Bruno. He’s a fantastic player, he has real quality and it's the same with Sean. Whoever plays we are all working hard to push each other.

"But it’s not just in our position that’s happening. We are all working hard and pushing each other.”

Good interview by Connolly, gives some good knowledge of how things are in the changing room now. Seems a lot more positive than what it was. A lot of players are saying how the atmosphere is much better and it's quite clearly showing by the performances. It's a pity the atmosphere in the crowd is still negative!

Completely agree. I was indeed a doubter but I'm man enough to always admit when I'm wrong (which is thankfully rare ). Considering what he walked into (and I'm sure he did), I think the guy has done very well indeed and we the fans should now be showing him the appreciation he deserves.

That's your opinion about Connelly I don't agree with it and things are working at the moment and we are looking solid and got 12 points from 18 from a pretty tough looking run of fixtures and we don't seem to have problem attacking we have scored in all of our games so far you just want Slade and the team to fail to fit your agenda.
