Palestinian Flag Seen As ‘Political’ And ‘Offensive’ At Cardiff Stadium

2015 Monday 7TH posted by Morning Star in Sport

AN ESTIMATED 1,500 demonstrators took part in yesterday’s peaceful pro-Palestine demonstration in Wales against the backdrop that the Palestinian flag would be seen as a “political or offensive banner” inside Cardiff City Stadium.

Wales hosted Israel in a Euro 2016 qualifier but the build-up to the match was overshadowed by the fact that fans could be handed a three-year stadium ban if caught inside the stadium with a Palestinian flag.

Under Uefa regulations, the Palestine flag is not deemed a political or offensive banner but a decision was made ahead of the match to block Wales supporters showing solidarity with those in Palestine.
They told the Star: “Following consultation with our duty safety officer and South Wales Police and after taking into account the planned demos, we have determined that Palestinian flags will not be allowed in the stadium for their breach our banner policy due to the fact that at this fixture they would be considered contentious.”

Annis I'm pretty sure that I read somewhere that whilst the Palestinian flag is not considered politica by EUFA its appearance at a game with Israel would constitute a political demonstration and as such frowned on by those in power?

Sports and Politics dont mix.

I thought that the police and FAW handled the situation well, yesterday. They allowed the pro-Palestinian demo, and provided the security needed for Israel. Difficult balancing act. Personally, I agree that inside the stadium was not the place to make protests, with or without the Palestinian flag. The Morning Star has a long tradition of supporting the Palestinians, especially the PLO, and now Fatah. In other words the secular movements for Palestine. Whether a flag is 'offensive' or not is complicated, but depends on the situation. All in all, thought it was handled well yesterday.

Didn't see the demo., came in off the M4, but thought the figure sounded a bit high. Reminds me of the CND marches in the 80s. The organisers would claim a million marching through central London, the Met would say 80,000!

1500????
There were more people with Israeli flags in the park than the terrorist supporters.
Just shows how uneducated they are, they cant even count.

Wait for our resident Nazi Aherne to pop up and explain for us.

to be fair it is a highly political move to bring in flags of palestine. there is a clear and unequivocal ban on using football matches as a platform to advance a political agenda so i fully support this. for the same reason they would reject people advancing the israeli cause at matches.
