Watching Cardiff City Alone.

Sat Sep 05, 2015 1:15 am

Sappainnnn laaaa's,

I have had quite a few convos with my closet friends, who all play football in the Welsh League, but myself, decided to quit at the age of 25, to properly follow the Bluebirds. For the past few seasons, I have had issues getting involved with them as they rarely attend games anymore... Its an annoyance because I would find it easier getting over Newport County with mates. I dis QPR away, alone, and it was a weird experience. Its pretty much left me watching CCFC alone, and debating whether I should just continue playing football.

Out of curiousity, does anyone else, or has anyone else attended games by themselves, and what are you experiences? Its made me wonder, what is more important... Just supporting Cardiff City, or the match day experience with pals? Nottingham Forest away was the first time in ages we all went together.

Only been to a football match by myself once and that was last October against Cyprus due to the person I was going with fell ill, and I actually enjoyed myself!

I have a season ticket with my old man and personally I wouldn't enjoy it down the City as much without him as mainly it's the only time I ever get the chance to see him due to the fact I don't live at home anymore.

Most of the lads I used to go to City away games with have stopped going now (since the rebrand) and haven't returned unfortunately, which is the a shame because it was a good laugh and I now find myself going to less and less away games because of this. I can't wait for France next year just because we're all getting together again for the football only this time it's for Wales. :thumbright:

I go to games by myself most of the time. My dad and my niece sometimes come to home games, my niece sometimes to away games. I've got a ST on the corner of the Canton and grandstand. I always see people that I know, but I never set off with a group. It's always been about the football for me, pure and simple. In other words, it's not a social event. For away games, I travel on the supporters' club coaches. Again, I usually set off by myself, but always see people I know. Quite a few travel by themselves. Point is, however you set off, we all have a common interest. Always get talking to people, and fellow fans are friendly, especially on the coaches. But the football is the centre of everything.

My advice would be to get back on the pitch and play football. It beats watching every time.
I played for 25 years solid and watched City when I could. Now I've finished through age I watch all the time but NOTHING beats playing, the dressing room banter and the drinks after the game.
You'll have the odd Saturday, evening games and the rest of your life to watch football.

Spot on get back playing......

I was lucky, I am 47 so through my 20's we were in the dungeon. Went to the cold wet Tuesdays night home games against Rochdale (as did over 15K according to folklore on here) and when the parks were off....

Mate my advise is play play play which is what I did for 25 years, I was torn for a while as wanted to do both but the advise I was given was if you enjoy playing that much which I did then plenty of time for city. I am glad I took that advise, am now 38 and it's true city were still there waiting for me. When I played I still seen a lot of city fri games, Sunday, midweek, your own game rained off. That would be my advise, as for watching on your own over the years I have gone with mates gone on my own and it's never been more or less enjoyable as am there for the footy.

It's being with your mates I think, being in the away end at both Fulham and Millwall seeing us score LATE LATE goals like that and celebrating it with them makes it all the better.

For me, nothing beats watching Cardiff City, even if it is alone

I go to most games alone home and away but always have plenty folk to talk to around you in ground and en route

My advice to you would be to play football, you will regret stopping in twenty years time.

As for going alone, I always go down with/meet with a large group of people and I know a lot of regular match goers. However I sit on my own in the ground. I always say im going to move next to them but I can never be bothered, plus I love to hate and moan about the clueless and very unlikeable characters that sit around me at games. When I lived in London I did many of the midweek aways on my own.

It's no big deal really, a lot of people go down the football alone. As Llangain says it's hardly a lonely experience going to watch something with thousands of like minded people. I nearly always had a chat with different bluebirds when I was alone in London, I looked forward to chatting with people from back home. There are many things which are unacceptable socially to do alone, going to the football is not one of them.

Play as long as you can mate you'll be a long time watching,I'm 33 now and I still play and go to a few matches each season,I live in belfast mind, used to come home and go to games with my dad but I've been to plenty on my own too,my dad doesn't go no more but I take my wee man now days, what I'd say is play till you can't play no more and that doesn't mean u can't still go to few games, especially in the championship with mid week games, and in a few yrs u might even have a kid of your own to share it all with and trust there's no better feeling than that

Absolutely nothing wrong with going to games on your own. I've been quite a few times on my own when friends can't make it. I enjoy it just the same as the football is the centre of the occasion but it's nice to experience it with mates too. It really doesn't matter though, when your a cardiff fan and u get inside the stadium you belong to one big family anyway. I used to love playing football but had to give up due to a heart problem SVT from my early 20's. It was very frustrating as that was just about the only thing I was half good at, and I would say to anyone that has the opportunity to play for a team and that loves the sport should try and play. You will still be able to make some football matches. You'll have many years to watch the city play. The only reason why I got so into watching sports on TV and going down to the stadium is because I can't really play anymore. there were players on my team who were so skilful or had tremendous power or could score from just about anywhere for which I wasn't any good at but I was the fastest player by far on the team and could collect the ball and carry it all the way down the line - I'd usually fall over Once I'd got to the penalty area as my legs would be going too fast lol! But my point is playing gives you great memories and a better sense of achievement than going to any football match!

Play any sport while you can. I only attended occasional matches for many years, chasing the egg in the winter and playing cricket in the summer. Stopped playing sports at age 45 (egg chasing at 35!) and became a season ticket holder. Play while you can - apart from anything else, it's good for you!

I played at Welsh League Division 2 level, so fairly high, but this was for no money, and alot of time consumed - training tues/thurs, matches sat and some weds. I think I am in a rut. Getting bored of taking football "seriously" as I have been doing it since I was 16, 10 years come end of September, but my mates are all playing still (most at a lower standard), my daughter is too young to get the whole CCFC matchday experience. Odd predicament, but I must say, I enjoyed QPR and Nottm Forest away more than beating a side who are top of the league (playing-wise).

I go on my own. I do prefer when I have my lady with me at cup games mind, even though she bloody hates football. Don't think she appreciated the guy smoking weed behind me at the Shrewsbury game this summer though, so god knows if I'll get her back for a game! :D

Always better when there is someone with you, but hey, Cardiff fans are a friendly bunch. And it's always fun listening to the moaners in 114! And who doesn't love hugging a complete stranger when we score late on away from home? :D

Little boy due in January. Already making plans for his first season ticket!

i dont mind watching city alone, had an ST on my own last season and occasionally brought a mate.

one thing that did bother me was the travel....i have to get public transport from newport which can take up to an hour and a half, so really i end up spending 3 hours traveling for 90 min of footbal...thats what stopped me enjoying going on my own

I can imagine mate, I actually used to play football near you for Newport Civil Service, and half of my mates and family are from near you, over Bettws.

I have been training with a club, but keep putting off signing, as this saturday I shall be watching Cardiff City again. :bluescarf:

Used to go on my own until recently, where I meet up with good friends and then we sit in the same area. Still travel down on my own.

Don't see a problem at all with people going on their own, if they don't have any good friends who go to matches then why not?

Must say, though, I prefer it now than when I did go on my own. Good to enjoy the match and have good company :thumbright:

I am going by myself on saturday, going to judge properly then. If I still feel a bit "out of place", then I shall be lacing my boots up, and getting back onto the pitch. :) :bluescarf:
