Pompey ‘unlikely’ to sign target Eoin Doyle

Pompey will find it hard to beat other interested parties to the signing of Cardiff City striker Eoin Doyle, according to Leam Richardson.

After reports linked the Cardiff City striker with a move to Fratton Park, the Blues assistant boss admitted the 27-year-old is someone manager Paul Cook would be keen to bring in – having worked with him at Chesterfield and Sligo Rovers.

The Irishman scored 25 goals in the first half of last season in League One to earn his move to the Championship.

He ended the season on 30 goals.

But he has made just two appearances in the Capital One Cup so far this season and Richardson believes there would be a queue of clubs lining up to sign him if he was made available.

Richardson said: ‘Eoin is a good player.

‘We’ve worked with him before and the gaffer has worked with him a few times.

‘He is one of those players the manager gets the best out of but I think we would be lucky to get Eoin Doyle.

‘He has worked hard to get a move to the Championship and I think he will want to knock around there for a little bit longer.

‘I think there would be a lot of interest in Eoin and we would always be interested.

‘But I think it would be unlikely to get him – yes.

‘I think there would be a bit of a pull from other clubs, financially, as well.’

Richardson also confirmed that no approach had been made.

He said: ‘We haven’t spoken to him or Cardiff.

‘He’s an honest kid and he gets you goals – that’s exactly what the manager wants.

‘People bang their heads against a brick wall with the lack of good, honest strikers.

‘But he certainly fits into that bracket.’

I agree Annis, Pompey is the perfect club for him  I can't see him moving forward at our club...

Agree, and don't think Revell is either...

I still think he could have a bit-part to play here if a loan doesn't come off. Unfortunately it just hasn't worked out, for a variety of reasons.

James, he's simply not good enough at this level...

Not sure about that - he scored 5 goals for us in half a season last year in a team totally bereft of attacking ideas despite not starting every game. I think he shows promise but we seem intent on signing strikers only to decide after 5 minutes that they aren't good enough and then let them go where they flourish. I'm not saying Doyle will do that at this level, but give the guy a season before you write him off - he was top scorer in League One when we signed him.

I totally agree that players aren't being given enough time to prove themselves, but Doyle has been poor IMO, Championship is 1 league too high for him :thumbright: but if he leaves best of luck to him :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :bluescarf:

to be honest you can never say a league is too high for someone, because it comes a time when a player joins a club and everything just clicks. and sometimes it takes time. we sign bothroyd who was lets be fair up until that point a failed player who was on the drop. but at cardiff it all just clicked. i think we rushed to sign him though. and i dont feel loaning him to a league two side would help his development, if he was around 18 then fair enough but hes passed that stage, maybe a loan to a lower league championship side if he can get the games.

Preston North End are lining up a bid to sign Cardiff City striker Eoin Doyle on a season-long loan.
