The Bluebirds manager played down interest in Tamas a week ago only to then sign the former West Brom defender
Russell Slade admitted he bluffed over Cardiff City’s interest in defender Gabriel Tamas because ‘two or three’ English clubs were keen on the Romanian international.
The Bluebirds manager played down interest in Tamas a week ago after the former West Brom and Watford player had spent a day’s trial with Cardiff.
But Tamas has now signed a one year contract with anther year’s option and Slade says: “He had two or three offers and we wanted to keep it low profile.
What a clever manager we have![]()
“Managers bluff from time to time.
“I have gone for an experienced defender who knows his way around. Tamas has 63 caps for his country and they don’t come much more experienced than that.
“He can play centre-half or in either of the full-back positions, while he can also cover as a sitting midfield player.
“Tamas is a useful acquisition, but he has to get up to speed and won’t be in the squad at Nottingham Forest.
“He wanted to come back to the UK with his family.
“He wanted to come back to the UK with his family.
“He played in a Champions League qualifier for Bucharest and was then looking at options here.”
Slade has a lot of cover at centre-back with Sean Morrison, Matt Connolly, Ben Turner and Bruno Manga in the squad, but he said: “For the majority of this season we have had only two central defenders available with Turner and Manga injured.
“Both are on the way back, although Turner still has some way to go. Manga is getting back up to speed and it was pleasing to see that he got better and better at MK Dons as the game went on in midweek.
“Manga has a slight ankle injury, but he is getting there.”
