The news alarmed the Welsh side who will hope to complete a deal before other sides enter the race for the experienced midfielder.
However, Nolan’s wage demands and a desire to continue to play at a top level might represent the biggest challenge for Russell Slade’s side as they try to lure the Liverpool-born to the Cardiff City Stadium.
It is understood that he is still considering his options, which also include pursuing his career abroad.
The 33-year-old joined West Ham from Newcastle United in 2011, and made his debut in the home defeat against Cardiff City – he went on help his team win promotion back to the Premier League, three years in the claret and blue shirt brought 157 games and 31 goals.
City have completed three signings this summer but are still in search for a midfielder and a striker, to ultimately help their chances of a top six spot come the end of the season.
Cardiff currently sit in seventh place in the Sky Bet Championship table, and have won once, and drawing three of their first four league games.
