FURIOUS RUSSELL SLADE/WANTS THE RULES CHANGED
Wednesday 26th August 2015
By Terry Phillips
The furious Bluebirds boss insists League Cup ties should go straight to penalties if they're level after 90 minutes
Russell Slade wants Capital One Cup rules changed, saying: “Nottingham Forest will be delighted we have had to play 120 minutes.”
The Cardiff City manager was furious after his team had to play extra-time against MK Dons before going down 2-1 to a winner scored after 108 minutes.
“This competition should go straight to penalties if the scores are level after 90 minutes,” said Slade. “We are playing Saturday-Tuesday, Saturday-Tuesday and it’s wrong that we had to play another 30 minutes.
“A lot of managers would agree with me. Both managers would have been happy to decide this tie on penalties and not have extra-time. Some players will have to go out again on Saturday and Forest will be delighted we have had a tough 120 minutes.”
MK Dons v Cardiff City
Slade said his City team should have won the tie: “We had huge domination at times, more shots. At 1-0 we should have put the game to bed.
“The players seemed to tire a little in the last 15 minutes, but they were galvanised in extra-time.
“We wanted to win, we want to win all our games and keep momentum going. It was a decent performance despite all the changes.”
More: 120 frustrating minutes summed up in 120 quickfire seconds
City suffered a series of mishaps with Aron Gunnarsson, Lee Peltier and Stuart O’Keefe suffering injuries, while Craig Noone had to go off to be ill during normal time.
“Noone ran off to the loo because he is one of the players who has picked up a bug,” said Slade. “We hoped he would get back on the pitch quickly and he was able to. Declan John, too, has suffered along with Scott Malone.
“Gunnarsson felt a pull close to his groin and it wasn’t worth risking, while Peltier turned an ankle and had treatment but was able to go on later. I wanted O’Keefe to stay out because he did well for us, but his knee injury was causing him a problem and he had to come off.”

Fair point by Slade.
Teams already play weakened sides anyway to give fringe players a chance.
Maybe allow 5 subs to come on instead?

Squad rotation is an important part of game as is selecting the right squad.
Slade should have realised that last nights game was going to be close and picked a squad to reflect that. On Saturday Fabio was taken off suffering from the effects of cramp. Surely he should have had a left back on bench to cover Fabio. Why not put an academy kid on bench for the experience and to use if game went to extra time. Matt Kennedy has had no game time yet this season but slade bought on peltier for O'keefe. Why play Morrison? Why not give the kiddie from arsenal a game?
Slade really does not help himself at times. Whilst I want city to win every game that they play I am a realist and would rather sacrifice a place in round 3 of capital one cup if it meant squad players getting valuable game time.

The rules are the same for ALL clubs so RS should stop with the bleating and accept that despite a decent team performance we were hit by a sucker punch It doesn't matter who you play if you only manage 1 goal from 6 excellent chances then you leave yourself open to what eventually happened last night.
Perhaps he should reflect on the strength of our bench last night because unlike MK Dons, who were able to introduce 3 first team regulars to chase the game, we had only fringe attacking players. Would Whittingham , Mason and Pilkington have made a difference if they were on the bench.
A decent performance where we failed to get the result we deserved. It happens.

mickey mouse cup - concentrate of building a solid team for the championship obviously the team wasn't strong enough last night end off win some lose some move on to the next game !
Wed Aug 26, 2015 7:28 am
Pretty simple really, beat a pretty average MK Dons in normal time then rather than make excuses.
Wed Aug 26, 2015 7:33 am
FFS get over it Slade and stop moaning.
Wed Aug 26, 2015 7:48 am
If only we had a mystic meg who could have told us the rules before the game
Only answer would have been to play a stronger team and try and win in 90 mins or make more changes. Either way is down to the manager, no point moaning after.

Get up at 4am russ and do a full shift of manual work then you can whinge, stop moaning and get on with it,same for all teams.

What utter nonsense from Slade, first thing to say is that most of those who played last night will not be in the starting 11 on Saturday, and secondly, we are talking professional sportsmen, who should be the fittest of the fit and, barring injury should make a complete recovery in the days ahead, no this smacks of Slade getting his excuses in early for a possible poor performance this coming Saturday

Spot on. There was a very good chance that the game would end level.

Love this Mickey Mouse cup saying. Chelsea did'nt think so last season as could be seen by their celebrations at the end. But then again, we are sleeping giants and teams like Chelsea can only dream of being as big as us. I suppose this cup is beneath us so best leave it for the smaller teams like Arsenal, Chelsea, Spurs etc.

If we had won in extra time, he wouldn't had said a thing.

Don't worry too much Russ, under your management we have exited in the 2nd round of the League Cup = less games.

Almost sounds like a ready made excuse for forest game.

Chelsea arsenal ect ect have league cup on top of their priority list? They always put out top side don't they? Yes they celebrated madly when won it but would they be heartbroken if went out cup?Don't think so, guess they are not interested in champions league or premier title as they are only Mickey mouse competitions!

Apart form last year, I have no idea whos won it for the past 5 years and beyond. And I cant remember anything about last years, only the winners.
Edit: tells you everything. I thought Man City won it last year.
The fa cup it is not!.

Exactly, we knew the rules before entering. Same for both sides.
This guy looks for problems and excuses.

It does sound like he's making an excuse but he's 100% spot on, it's just one massive waste of time (as are replays in the FA Cup).

Have to disagree about FA cup replays. They are potentially a great money spinner for lower league and non league clubs and could be the difference between survival and clubs going to wall.

Never had a problem before penalty shoot outs. Matches often went to a second or third replay, and at the same time we were playing Welsh cup and European Cup Winners Cup matches.

Karl Robinson said this about the Cup last year. Plenty of managers bring up the debate, whether it's bitter or not, they have a right to speak about it

True, it's good for little clubs, for clubs like us it just seems like a hassle especially in the early rounds.

Who said Champions League or Premier title are Mickey Mouse competitions. the only mention of a Mickey Mouse competition has come from our fans after we got knocked out last night. Did'nt hear any mention of it when we won in the first round, suddenly became a worthless competition when we lost. Strange that.

Can't disagree about extra time in league cup.
Revenue from a cup replay in round 3 could allow us to sign new players or reduce debt

Agree.

Players in the 70s used to play over 50 games a season on muddy, sandy pitches, icy pitches and get the shit kicked out of them........today they have huge squads, travel in luxery coaches or even fly, stay in hotels...........and lets not forget they are playing a sport they love for money..............maybe a week or two digging the roads or working underground would be easier for them.

This is such a lame issue to highlight just after being beaten.
How does Slade think sides like Spurs managed when they were in The Europa League, 2 cups and the Premier League?
They used different players for a start. It doesn't matter then.
Slade could say he doesn't have a big enough squad. Oh, wait a minute, the squad is still big even after shedding some players.
The truth is, he wants the penny and the bun. He wants to remain in the cup, but isn't prepared to sacrifice some team sharpness (although 2 matches per week should be ok for fit pro players).
Who the he'll is going to listen to someone like Slade who hasn't earned his spurs yet at this level let alone in the top tier!
By the way, if it is the Micky Mouse cup, why is it that Premier League teams seem to win it? If they didn't value it, they wouldn't bother trying. Here are the winners last 10 years (in descending years 2015-2006)
CHELSEA
MAN C
SWANSEA
LIVERPOOL
BIRMINGHAM
MAN U
MAN U
SPURS
CHELSEA
MAN U
All Premier League at the time they won.
Ask Arsene Wenger if he would have liked to win one or two of those years!!
By the way, many of those winners were also in Championship League.
Slade needs to keep his trap shut and let the results do the talking.
