Cardiff City critics 'Everybody thought I'd be down the road by now but we're in good shape'

Sunday 23rd August 2015

BY TERRY PHILLIPS

As Gary Boywer becomes the first manager to get sacked in the Championship, Russell Slade insists his Cardiff City team are on the up.

Russell Slade is starting to get people to take notice of Cardiff City

Delighted Cardiff City boss Russell Slade insists he's already proving his critics wrong by dodging the dubious honour of being the fist managerial casualty of the Championship season.

On the day Blackburn boss Gary Bowyer was handed that unwanted tag, Slade's confident Cardiff City team sent out a statement to the whole division with an impressive 2-0 win against widely fancied Wolves.

Moments after he'd enjoyed the adulation of the delighted Cardiff crowd, defiant Slade said: “Everybody thought I’d be down the road by the end of August but we’re in good shape.

“We were desperate for that first win in the league because we think we've made a good start.

“We felt we could have won against Fulham but that draw put pressure on us for the two away games that followed.

“We earned a 2-2 draw at QPR and then had to earn another solid point at Blackburn.

“But this was the game . We are in quite a good place now. We are making progress.”

Sammy Ameobi walked away the hero after scoring his first Bluebirds goal to secure the win.

Slade had resisted calls to play the Newcastle United loanee from the start but brought him off the bench to make a major impact on the match.

Of his star summer signing, Slade said: “He is still trying to get up to full speed, but we were given a little clip of what he is all about.

“It was a fantastic goal. That will spur him and give him momentum.

“He’s a great boy and has mixed in really well since arriving from Newcastle.”

Calm down Russell - there's a long way to go yet.

Credit it where it's due - a good result yesterday and some decent football played but don't get carried away too quickly.

Ole had more points from the first four games last season than you've got so far this season so I'd hold on a while before blowing your own trumpet.

But well done on yesterday - perhaps you'll start with Kenwyne ahead of the "fantastic" Revell a a bit more often.

Of the players that Slade has bought in only Peltier started yesterday

Perhaps Slade will now look at his squad and play noone, amoebi, jones etc.

No we didn't. Slade is just as reactionist as a large proportion of the fan base. Many said he would be gone by Christmas. Well Slade, it isn't even September yet so calm down. You have delivered as expected so far, an average points haul of 6 from 12. Let's not get carried away.

Totally agree.
A solid start but I wouldn't be going to OTT if I was him.

Allan, if Slade can get us near the top at Xmas time then that will tell me he is the right manager for us after all as where we are around Xmas time will tell us a lot. I will be happy that he has proved me wrong if that happens.

Not at all. If we are near the top at Christmas then he will have done an excellent job. However, it is early days.

If we are near the relegation places at Christmas there will still be some on here making excuses for him and saying that Slade must be given a chance and another transfer window to try and get his own players in and is still trying to establish his own style of play and the club is in a mess etc.

You can't have it both ways.

You cannot deny that since Slade arrived everything Slade as said as been ridiculed by some fans on here whether it be good or otherwise! My point is no matter what he says regardless of league position some on here will find reason to ridicule him! :thumbright:

His comments the other day about Revell and us fans not getting him, was a bit stupid. Kenwynne did more in 55 minutes yesterday, than Revell has done over 3 games.

Again the headlines both on Wales Online and this post are taken out of context compared to the actual interview.

(Although in fairness to OP (can't remember who posted it sorry) the post on this board is just echoing what WOL is saying so it's not like the OP is twisting it more Terry Phillips doing.)

The way this is article is written is as if Slade has come out and been really bullish and confrontational. Use of words like defiant, slams critics etc...

Terry Phillips opening line also adds a completely different slant on what Slade has said compared to how RS actually delivered it.

Gary Bowyer wasn't mentioned during the press conference (at least during the bit on City player that is available and where the rest of the quotes come from) so claiming Slade 'insists he's already proving his critics wrong by dodging the dubious honour of being the fist managerial casualty of the Championship season' is a bit naughty and very misleading.

In fact what actually happened was a journalist asked RS

Russell You've had four games... are you where you expected to be? Are you quite satisfied with the first four games? It's quite an unkind start to the fixture list...

Slade then basically made a little joke 'Yeah everybody thought i'd down the road by the end of August I suspect' (he laughed a touch after it) which was actually quite self deferential and honest about the fact that he clearly knows that he has some way to go to win over the fan base.

Not slamming his critics. Just a little bit of honest wry humour.

I said it in another post if we are going to crucify the man over every single comment he makes then those comments at least need to be taken in context. :ayatollah:

If we'd have drawn against Wolves, it would have been an average start. Unbeaten but only four points from four.

The fact that we won, things look a lot better on paper. But we deserved to win, like I feel we deserved to win at QPR. Only Fulham, and Blackburn going by reports as I wasn't there, have we only played well enough to earn a point.

But four games in, and we can't really complain... Yet.
