Cardiff City accuse West Brom of 'trying to pinch David Marshall on the cheap' and dismiss Sheffield Wednesday 'bid' for Kenwyne Jones

Cardiff boss Russell Slade has hit out at West Brom and Sheffield Wednesday amid their interest in David Marshall and Kenwyne Jones

Russell Slade says the club will only accept 'ridiculous' money for David Marshall

Cardiff City manager Russell Slade has hit out at two clubs trying to tempt away two of his biggest players.

The bullish Bluebirds boss, whose side go in search of their first Championship win against Wolves tomorrow, firstly accused West Brom of trying to pinch goalkeeper David Marshall on the cheap and then insisted that, despite reports that Sheffield Wednesday had put a bid in for striker Kenwyne Jones, he has had no contact with the Yorkshire club at all.

Premier League West Brom have been pursuing Scottish international Marshall for several weeks now and saw an initial bid of £4.5m for the shot-stopper firmly rebuffed by the Bluebirds.

Slade said that offer was almost verging on the insulting for the 30-year-old and said he was determined to hold onto Marshall, who started his first game of the season in the Bluebirds draw at Blackburn midweek, unless he was offered ‘ridiculous’ money for him.

Was this David Marshall's last appearance at Cardiff City Stadium?

“There’s no information, it’s very much as it’s been now for the last nine days,” said Slade.

“Fair play to the owner and (chief executive) Ken Choo, they have stuck to their guns with that. West Brom initially have come in and tried to pinch him on the cheap and that is not going to happen. I’m not just pointing at West Brom mind, that goes for any club, that is not going to happen.

“David is a terrific bloke. He’s performed fantastically well for the club over a good few years. He has a great reputation in the game for being a top goalkeeper and we don’t want to lose him unless we are getting ridiculous money.”

Jones meanwhile is yet to start a match for Cardiff this season after spending the summer playing for Trinidad & Tobago. He is slowly regaining full fitness but has caught the eye of Wednesday who were initially hoping to land him on loan.

Reports suggested Wednesday had actually then decided to sign the 30-year-old on a permanent deal and had put a bid in. Slade poured cold water on such suggestions and said Jones remained very much in his plans.

“There’s nothing in the Kenwyne thing, honestly. I don’t even know where that one is coming from. I’ve been asked maybe five times about that now,” said Slade.

“Kenwyne is with us, he will be with us tomorrow. I have had no conversation with Sheffield Wednesday.

“Our aim is to get him up to speed when it comes to fitness. He’s clearly getting closer and has had more training sessions and more minutes on the pitch. He is getting much closer.”

Slade is targeting promotion

Slade is hoping to add two new players to his squad before the transfer window closes but he admitted if Marshall and Jones are still at the club on September 1, that would feel like something of a triumph too.

The Cardiff boss added: “If Kenwyne and David are here when the transfer window closes it would be a big boost for us because they are big players for this football club. They are good professionals.”

I see what your saying but I think that we need to get the deadwood off the wage bill, players we are not going to use, if we sell our best players and replace with cheaper options we will just go backwards

Good to see the club not letting players go on the cheap, for a change.

Personally I'm glad it looks like Kenwyne is staying, it's a split subject with our fans but I'm a fan.
