A forum for all things Cardiff City

I seen a post earlier on here about how effective the Men of Harlech chant was in increasing the atmosphere within the Cardiff City Stadium. Obviously, there was mixed views but forum user 'Lengee' said that
"Yma o Hyd is more like an anthem and more likely to intimidate the opposition and let them know they are in another country. The chorus is simple and basically means whatever gets thrown at us we stand together .... We are still here in spite of everything - as a football club and as a country."Personally, before looking on Youtube, I hadn't even heard of the song shamefully. Anyway, Following on from Lengee, do you think that Yma o Hyd being chanted around the ground could help spark the atmosphere at the CCS? - The Welsh national anthem being sang at Welsh games and at City's game against QPR this season was immense in my opinion.
If like me, you hadn't heard the song before, check it out

Welsh Lyrics:
Dwyt ti'm yn cofio Macsen,
does neb yn ei nabod o.
Mae mil a chwe chant o flynyddoedd,
yn amser rhy hir i'r co'.
Pan aeth Magnus Maximus o Gymru,
yn y flwyddyn tri-chant-wyth-tri,
a'n gadael yn genedl gyfan,
a heddiw - wele ni!
Ry'n ni yma o hyd,
ry'n ni yma o hyd,
er gwaetha pawb a phopeth,
er gwaetha pawb a phopeth,
er gwaetha pawb a phopeth.
Ry'n ni yma o hyd,
ry'n ni yma o hyd,
er gwaetha pawb a phopeth,
er gwaetha pawb a phopeth,
er gwaetha pawb a phopeth.
Ry'n ni yma o hyd.
Chwythed y gwynt o'r Dwyrain,
rhued y storm o'r môr,
hollted y mellt yr wybren,
a gwaedded y daran "encôr"!
Llifed dagrau'r gwangalon,
a llyfed y taeog y llawr.
Er dued yw'r fagddu o'n cwmpas,
ry'n ni'n barod am doriad y wawr!
Ry'n ni yma o hyd,
ry'n ni yma o hyd,
er gwaetha pawb a phopeth,
er gwaetha pawb a phopeth,
er gwaetha pawb a phopeth.
Ry'n ni yma o hyd,
ry'n ni yma o hyd,
er gwaetha pawb a phopeth,
er gwaetha pawb a phopeth,
er gwaetha pawb a phopeth.
Ry'n ni yma o hyd.
Cofiwn i Facsen Wledig
adael ein gwlad yn un darn
A bloeddiwn gerbron y gwledydd,
"Mi fyddwn yma tan Ddydd y Farn!"
Er gwaetha pob Dic Siôn Dafydd,
er gwaetha 'rhen Fagi a'i chriw,
byddwn yma hyd ddiwedd amser,
a bydd yr iaith Gymraeg yn fyw!
Ry'n ni yma o hyd,
ry'n ni yma o hyd,
er gwaetha pawb a phopeth,
er gwaetha pawb a phopeth,
er gwaetha pawb a phopeth.
Ry'n ni yma o hyd,
ry'n ni yma o hyd,
er gwaetha pawb a phopeth,
er gwaetha pawb a phopeth,
er gwaetha pawb a phopeth.
Ry'n ni yma o hyd,

Ry'n ni yma o hyd,

er gwaetha pawb a phopeth...

You don't remember Macsen,
nobody knows him.
One thousand and six hundred years,
a time too long to remember.
When Magnus Maximus left Wales,
in the year 383,
leaving us a whole nation,
and today - look at us!
We are still here,
we are still here,
in spite of everyone and everything,
in spite of everyone and everything,
in spite of everyone and everything.
We are still here,
we are still here,
in spite of everyone and everything,
in spite of everyone and everything,
in spite of everyone and everything.
We are still here.
Let the wind blow from the East,
let the storm roar from the sea,
let the lightning split the heavens,
and the thunder shout "encore!"
Let the tears of the faint-hearted flow,
and the servile lick the floor.
Despite the blackness around us,
we are ready for the breaking of the dawn!
We are still here,
we are still here,
in spite of everyone and everything,
in spite of everyone and everything,
in spite of everyone and everything.
We are still here,
we are still here,
in spite of everyone and everything,
in spite of everyone and everything,
in spite of everyone and everything.
We are still here.
We remember that Macsen the Emperor
left our country in one whole piece.
And we shall shout before the nations,
"We'll be here until Judgement Day!"
Despite every Dic Siôn Dafydd,
despite old Maggie5 and her crew,
we'll be here until the end of time,
and the Welsh language will be alive!
We are still here,
we are still here,
in spite of everyone and everything,
in spite of everyone and everything,
in spite of everyone and everything.
We are still here,
we are still here,
in spite of everyone and everything,
in spite of everyone and everything,
in spite of everyone and everything.
We are still here,
we are still here,
in spite of everyone and everything,
in spite of everyone and everything,
in spite of everyone and everything.
We are still here,
we are still here,
in spite of everyone and everything,

We're getting somewhere singing the Welsh anthem at away days. If we can get this in then it'd benefit us all. The Welsh language is important

I think this song is really applicable to our club especially after the last few years! Even just the chorus of it would be great in my opinion! Good idea to start a thread on it, hopefully it will catch on

Ry'n ni yma o hyd,
ry'n ni yma o hyd,
er gwaetha pawb a phopeth,
er gwaetha pawb a phopeth,
er gwaetha pawb a phopeth.
Ry'n ni yma o hyd

I just watched this sat in Sao Paulo waiting for my flight - brought tears to my eyes, thank you.
This is what we need - we are one, despite everything.

Great idea. It's such a rousing tune, but no doubt you'll have some on here who completely oppose it because it's in Welsh.

This will never happen.
And sing it in Welsh? Ridiculous.
Even with a full stadium in the Prem we couldn't sing Men Of Harlech and the words were put up for us!
Even the song which I consider to be belong to us and us alone - Little Pick & Shovel - is only sung occasionally and then, only by a handful.

Agree! It always annoys me when the whole stadium fails to sing Pick and Shovel loudly. Its THE city song and its unique! I loves it I do 'cos I's from Kairdiff

It was sung quite well at one of the recent games. Wimbledon, I think. We've got enough songs as Cardiff City. Must say, I'm not keen on these Welsh nationalist songs. In either language. OK, perhaps, for Wales games, but not for the bluebirds.

Wimbledon??
The Canton was shut and there were about 30, mostly kids that chanted a bit at the back of 116.

I know, but I'm sure I heard it during the second half, coming from the back of the Ninian stand. Perhaps because it was so quiet otherwise. I took my eye off the play for a moment, to look over, because it took me a bit by surprise. (I'm in the grandstand). I'm sure I heard it. Unless I was dreaming, of course, which is quite possible!

Yma o hyd is the famed Llanelli Scarlets rugby song.
This all seems a bit desperate to me. Please dont take that the wrong way, i dont mean to cause offence and can see you are on,y trying to improve the atmosphere, which is commendable.
But songs like this (club anthems) naturally happen, they arent researched and arranged to be sung. Its like we need to have some identity so are jumping on anything Welsh and trying to force it through. Pick and shovel isnt perfect - but its ours.
The jacks didnt club together and decide to sing Hymns and Arias, it just happened spontaniously, just like the iconic Welsh anthem moment in the second half of Wales v Belgium. These things arent calculated or arranged. Its what makes them special and unique.
I used to cringe every time when I heard that Bob Marley song being sung at games, especially when people were justifying it with "he played a gig at Ninian Park once". We as a club need to naturally evolve, thats the fans too. We need to stop trying to be seen as something we are not. Cardiff is not typically a welsh speaking city.

NO OFFENCE TAKEN BUT .......this is my response. Just our team, our fans need fire in their bellies.
We dont need to write a thesis on why people sing songs.(wiltshireblue)!!Some of us are just proud to be City fans and proud to be Welsh. We get emotional and when we hear a good rousing tune/ anthem we will open our mouths and sing!! in any case it is not a Llanelli rugby song it was written by a Welshman who prefers football to rugby.
As for it being in Welsh - so what? I comes from Llanrumney in Cairdiff but I learnt Welsh - but it makes no difference.
Most people in Wales are not Welsh speakers- so what? Do we change the language of our anthem - No. True Welshmen get emotional and open their mouths and join in as best they can....and good on them. Half the people that sing the Welsh anthem arent Welsh speakers.
It was written by a Welsh nationalist - so what? Do we check the politics of the people that write all songs before singing.
Like a lot of things in life "suck it and see". Maybe it wont catch on but none of the other songs have and theyve been playing them for donkeys years.
Fri Aug 21, 2015 5:45 pm
Yma o hyd would be awesome if we could get it going even just in da da da form (as per Men of Harlech)
As for anthems I put this together based on Bob Marley's No woman no cry and still think it would work as a chant....
Https:/soundcloud.com/sibaroni/city-till-i-die-demo
If the link don't work (on my mobile) just google sibaroni + soundcloud and it should be there somewhere
Only a drunken Stab at it but think it could be a cool and unique chant...

If this came from a proud and passionate place then there would be no need to try and "arrange" for it to be sung, it just would be sung. Most people in Wales are not welsh speakers because the densely populated areas are English speakers. Cardiff is among that densely populared area I speak of.
West Wales and North Wales have it as part of their daily life and herritage, which is why a lot of their sports teams do have a welsh theme in the terraces - yma o hyd is heard at Parc Y Scarlets week in week out and of course Hymns and Arias at jackland.
Our herritage and our history sporned a spontaniuous terrace anthem and that is "pick and shovel" which came from the many miners we had supporting City. This effort to get a welsh song arranged that happens almost season on season that is largely met with apathy strikes me of trying to create an identity rather than simply just having one from being who we are.
Fri Aug 21, 2015 6:08 pm
Instead of Yma O hyd maybe we could switch it to "TAN MUST GO" and the other bit replaced with "WE WILL NOT STAND FOR THIS"
OOO TAN MUST GO
OOO TAN MUST GO OO
WE WILL NOT STAND FOR THIS
WE WILL NOT STAND FOR THIS
WE WILL NOT STAND FOR THIS
OOO TAN MUST GO
OOO TAN MUST GO OO O
WE WILL NOT STAND FOR THIS
WE WILL NOT STAND FOR THIS
WE WILL NOT STAND FOR THIS
O00 TAN MUST GO

Great post, totally agree! Pick and Shovel is our song. Come on chaps lets embrace it wholeheartedly. It represents the blood, sweat and tears of many of our fathers and grandfathers who supported City as a way of boosting their morale!

Thats all well and good, but it has naff all to do with football or Cardiff City. There is far too much searching for identity that we are even scraping the barel of nicking a song off someone simply due to the fact he had a gig at the same venue?! The fact marleys songs have nothing to do with football and certainly not the people of Cardiff - seems lost on the few who persue with it.
You dont hear the jacks singing "get this party started" because Pink played there once, or "Don't stop movin'" because S Club 7 performed there.
Its all a bit "try hard" for my liking, and im sure im in the majority as this stuff never catches on and is viewed very apathetically, largely due to the reasons ive already gone over.
If you have to search for an identity - then it simply isnt yours.

Wiltshireblue.... What's wrong with adopting a welsh song? So according to you, because most people in Cardiff speak English, then Cardiff ain't aloud to embrace being Welsh? That's a pathetic attitude to have. You can't call yourself a proud Welshman if you do not agree with singing Welsh songs I'm sorry.

There is nothing wrong with it if it comes from a genuine place. Ive not said Cardiff cannot embrace a Welsh song because its largely English speaking, ive said the reason we dont is because we are largely english speaking. So our true identity is to not, surely? Anything else is forced.
That isnt identity then, thats shallow bravado. What we would like to be seen as rather than what we actually are.
This scrabbling around for an identity is horrible to witness. Bob Marley songs because he did a gig in Cardiff once, trying to get English speakers to sing Welsh songs.
You shouldnt have to try to get anybody to do anything is the point, if it is the true identity of an area, then it just happens.
