Scott Malone targets Championship promotion

Defender Scott Malone says Cardiff City are capable of achieving automatic promotion from the Championship.

His spectacular last-minute strike earned a 2-2 draw at Queens Park Rangers to maintain their unbeaten start in all competitions.

Malone, 24, said a specific target has not been discussed at the club.

But he added: "The way we're playing and the vibe in the dressing room, why can't we finish in the top six, if not the top two?"

Clint Hill and Charlie Austin put QPR 2-0 up at Loftus Road before skipper Sean Morrison reduced the deficit and Malone's dipping 22-yard effort earned QPR a point.

Russell Slade's side began the Championship season with a 1-1 draw against Fulham, followed by a 1-0 League Cup win over Wimbledon.

Since losing at Ipswich late last season, they have not been beaten in six games.

Cardiff finished 11th last season - their first since Premier League relegation - and Malone said Cardiff must avoid a similarly
"up-and-down" campaign.

"If we can keep drawing and keep winning this year, then we can be right up there," he said after scoring his first goal for the club following his arrival from Millwall in January.

I think auto might just be out of reach but we still have to challenge for it, IMO top six is definitely achievable and it should be a minimum.

We are capable of beating all and any team in this league IMO, so we should be looking to beat blackburn away as i think the squad have that feel good feeling right now and are positive about the season ahead, when they feel like that it will make all the difference to performances

Last year someone said our reserves can win this league we all know what happened after.It's good to hear the players are positive but let's wait until January to see where we are before making statements like this for the press.

Fair enough - the day he was appointed I was the first to say he deserved a chance but he's been very poor IMO. He's League 1 level, Championship is one League too high. The key in this league is Experience I'm afraid that's something Slade hasn't got. The football under him last season was dire, I agree it's improved this season, but honestly believe we will not move forward under his management. I hope Slade proves me wrong but can't see it happening. I will support him as he's the manager of the club I love and support but poor manager IMO

I respect your opinion I think Slade will do well this season you don't have to be experienced to do well in the championship look at Warburton Paul Lambert Di Matteo Alex Neil Aitor Karanka and so on there are loads of managers who have done well without much experience.

Also, football dire last season, improved this season yet slade can't take us forward? Surely he has already? Bit of a contradiction there. I'm not his greatest fan but much of the criticism against him is just empty bias.

Be careful what you wish for.

If promotion happens automatically, will Tan decide to spend big again? If not, how would the present squad fare in the Premier League? Investment would be essential..

7th-12th will be fine for this season.

It's getting into the winning matches mode and few losses at home that'll achieve top 6.

There were 1,250 fans at Loftus Road,you continued to try and get them to sing Slade songs,How many joined in with you? Just yourself again you were fuming

We are 100% capable, whether Slade can achieve it time will tell. For now and support the boys.
