Cardiff City’s new signing Scott Malone was a target for German giants Borussia Dortmund

Cardiff City today were celebrating the signing of young talent Scott Malone for more reason than one, after it was revealed they fended off competition from German giants Borussia Dortmund for his signature. The 23-year-old left back was in demand as his contract was running down at Millwall and Cardiff finally brought him to the club today after a few weeks of negotiations. Malone has been put into the squad for the upcoming Championship clashes with Fulham the next port of call, but he could have been readying himself for his debut in the Bundesliga. Dortmund were showing interest in the young full-back and made “strong enquiries” according to Cardiff’s manager Russel Slade.

Reports: Borussia Dortmund ready to accept £16m bid from Manchester United for Ilkay Gundogan

The Championship boss admits he is delighted to have beat off competition from one of the biggest clubs in the world, despite Jurgen Klopp’s sides struggles this season. Slade told reporters: “Several other clubs were in for Scott. “Borussia Dortmund made strong enquiries about him, while there were other Championship clubs keen. “We are delighted Scott has signed. He is 6ft 2ins tall, athletic, will give us a lot going forward and defensively. He is a natural left footed who has previously scored five goals in one season. It is believed that Birmingham and Brighton were the other Championship clubs in for Malone. The arrival of Malone adds competition for Declan John and Fabio and Slade made it clear he is looking for them to fight for the place.

The way some of Slade's signings have been panned makes you wonder if Slade is as bad a Manager is quite a few members on here make out  .

Maybe he will show this season how shrewd he really is  .

Nearly everyone on here was condemning Malone from his very first game and used him as another example of how Slade "doesn't have a clue." Whenever people were naming their first choice team they all put Fabio or Declan John at left back. Large slice of humble pie anyone? Malone and his energy and pace is the reason that Slade can name Ralls on the left but allow him to spend a lot of time in the middle of the field working alongside and helping Whitts and Dikgacoi, safe in the knowledge that Malone is doing two jobs, one as a left back and the other as a left winger. Against QPR we were technically outnumbered in midfield with our 4:4:2 up against their 4:5:1 but with Malone covering the whole of the left flank and Ralls being able to help on many occasions in the middle we were able to dominate possession. :bluescarf:

one good goal doesnt mean anyone has to eat humble pie. he is an average championship defender - can't cross to save his life, is weak defensively and cowardly turns his back when the opposition winger crosses it into the box.

i cannot for the life of me get my head around slades thought process in paying money for this player when we already had john and fabio, both of whom have far more potential and attacking ability.

borussia dortmund? my f*cking arse
