QPR v Cardiff City: Bluebirds owner Vincent Tan makes rare appearance in crowd at Loftus Road

15 AUGUST 2015

BY CHRIS WATHAN

The Malaysian money man has only attended one match in the last year but has flown into London to run the rule over what manager Russell Slade is doing

Cardiff City owner Vincent Tan is at Loftus Road this evening to watch the Bluebirds take on QPR.

The Bluebirds backer has been largely absent from games in the last year, having attended just one home match since Cardiff were relegated from the Premier League.

But Tan was expected to turn up for the encounter in West London, and he duly has, the 63-year-old taking his seat in the Rangers directors' box.

Tan has held several meetings with under-fire manager Russell Slade and will now have the chance to run the rule over what his manager is doing first hand.

Slade has struggled to win over Bluebirds supporters since taking charge last October, with the club failing to threaten the Championship play-offs last season and playing largely uninspiring football.

He flies into London having spoken in Malaysia about how his big break in business and a $1bn fortune came after he read a random magazine article while still working in insurance.

He told an audience of retail executives: “My two big breaks were buying the McDonald’s franchise when I was 28 years old and then later getting the government to allow me to privatise Sports Toto (a Malaysian lottery-style gambling game).

“While I was still in the insurance line in 1973, I remember reading a TIME magazine article, ‘The Burger That Conquered The World’, one day while waiting for a client.

“After that I started sending letters to McDonald’s over and over again, till one day they invited me to the opening of the first McDonald’s in Singapore.

“I put in (£39,000) and they put in the other half, giving me 51% of the stake. And that’s how it all started.”

Saw him waving to the away end before the game.

I was amazed that there was not even one chorus of the "Vincent Tan you're a wanker" song during the whole game.

And I'm sure he wasn't here to watch us but to have a Malaysian love-in with Fernandes.

:P I think he's done to much damage right?

Irreversible? Or is he taking steps to engage with & work with fans, not against? :ayatollah:

I think you're right Stan, but some on here can only get off on a crisis so they will never forgive him.I think he's got a way to go yet but the signs are there.Like someone mentioned at least we didn't call him a wanker yesterday.
