Wilson, Cardiff’s number three goalkeeper behind David Marshall and Simon Moore, is highly rated by manager Russell Slade

Thursday 13th August 2015

Goalkeeper Ben Wilson talked his way through his Cardiff City debut - and came out with a clean sheet.

The young goalkeeper from County Durham, a former Sunderland professional, said: “I had to stay alert and focused. I did that through communication and kept talking all the way through.”

Wilson, who celebrated his 23rd birthday last Sunday, was well protected by the experienced back four in front of him - Peltier, Connolly, Morrison and Fabio - as the Bluebirds earned a 1-0 win against AFC Wimbledon in the Capital One Cup.

“It was great to keep a clean sheet in my first competitive match,” said Wilson. “I didn’t have a shot to save, but I was happy with my overall game.”

Wilson, Cardiff’s number three goalkeeper behind David Marshall and Simon Moore, is highly rated by manager Slade, goalkeeping coach Martyn Margetson and the Bluebirds’ coaches.

The Stanley-born keeper was safe and sure with his handling and said: “Martyn gave me a lot of help before the game. He has great experience and has shown confidence in me.”

Wilson was among the City substitutes for their first Championship match against Fulham with Marshall suspended and looks certain to be on the bench again at Queens Park Rangers on Saturday.

Goalkeeper David Marshall will miss Cardiff City's first three Championship fixtures of the season

Bluebirds goalkeeper David Marshall serves the last game of his suspension this weekend

He emerged through Sunderland’s youth Academy and signed a professional contract in 2010 before going out on loan spells to Harrogate, Gateshead and Chesterfield.

Wilson later signed for Cambridge United and then Accrington where he made his professional debut in a 1-0 Football League Trophy defeat against Crewe two years ago.

His move to Cardiff came during 2013 and he played under-21 Development football until he was promoted to the first team squad.

Slade has now given Wilson his League Cup debut and Wilson will hope to be given the nod again in the second round.

I am surprised he is 23, that's quite old for a number three keeper in the development squad since 2013, he really has to break through soon or he will have to leave surely?

It's impossible to judge him yet. He wasn't tested at all v. Wimbledon. Hope Marshall stays, but I can't see it happening....Slade is under instructions to sell.

I don't know, I saw him getting out of his car in the car park Tuesday evening & thought he looked brilliant and actually I rate him higher than Marshall.

Sometimes you just see something immediately. Sometimes that instinct is correct, sometimes it's wide of the mark. If you want to say that your instinct agrees with Russell Slade's assessment, I don't see the harm in that.

On the other hand, other posters may disagree with you. Maybe it was the tone of the reply, which could be seen as condescending (even if that was not the intention).

I think the trouble with keepers is that they have no margin for error. One mistake can lose a match. Strikers who miss the target aren't under as much pressure in this way. Missing the target feels bad, but maybe not as bad as failing to save.

Keep your wig on g man. I wasn't at the game, I live away so don't do midweek. I just usually like to judge keepers after I've seen them in a bit of action that's all...

Ever the diplomat.

I agree on the keeper front and this is why it baffles me how keepers are so much cheaper than attacking players...
