A lost generation of fans....

Wed Aug 12, 2015 5:31 pm

Living and growing up in Port Talbot in the 70s and 80s there was a 60/40 split in fans, in our favour.

Today while walking along Aberavon beach there wasn't one Cardiff top to be seen while there were loads of Swansea tops on children of all ages.

Are we in danger of losing a generation of fans?

They are already lost imo can't blame kids for looking to the premier league for a team, things could have been far different tho

Lost a new generation in the kids because they focused on finding the Malaysian Maradona and lost a Middle aged generation because of the rebrand

The lure of a premier league team doesn't attract me as a kid, City through thick and thin. :bluescarf:

We had the most fans in folly farm and that's all that matters.

It's Aberavon Beach. I'd despair if there were Cardiff fans there.

As an aside when did the fairground go. Used to go there back in the 70's

Our problem is that we are attracting what is call the floating voter but we can't do anything about it as we have no room, expansion can't come quick enough, 27k to start then 35k a few years later.

Any build dates yet. It seems to be dragging on. Is it because of ownership or site issues?

Joking aside about my 3 page thread on folly farm which was tongue in cheek and done to get a reaction of Roathie and friends all the Cardiff fans with shirts on were youngsters aged from babies through to teens. The jacks with shirts on ranged from babies to adults. Personally I can't understand adults wearing football shirts unless they are going to games.

To me it's great seeing kids interested in local teams whether it's ccfc or the jacks. Far better for s Wales kids to be supporting local team rather than scousers or United.

Sorry?

Are you suggesting you've been going round Folly Farm pissing on young children?

To be honest Im happy that they are wearing Welsh teams shirts rather than Liverpool et all. The rivalry is always shifting with us and the jacks although i think this gap is the largest since Toshack took them to success.
Tan and his rebrand wrecked our best chance of closing the gap for some years.
Our largest victory is getting the blue back. Im happy.

When I was a kid, we saw a day out at Aberavon Beach (with its Lido and its Fun Fair) as a big treat...

It's a shame, but nowadays it is a rare occasion that people from Cardiff (or its surrounding valleys) go anywhere near the place, so it's not too surprising that the bulk of people seen are 'locals' with Swansea shirts on!

The world (outside Swansea itself! :laughing6:) has moved on and so has peoples perception of a "good day out" and that somewhat sadly does not include the once very popular day out to Aberavon Beach ;)

I know and it hurts ! but what do you expect. The Jacks are an established premier side and these kids have only known them as a premiership side. Why would they want to support Cardiff, only through family tradition I guess.
Don't worry when they grow up they'll realise the stupidity of their ways and come to the home of Welsh football ;)

It's near enough Port Talbot, their local team is Swansea and they should rightly support them, pending links to Cardiff.

I'm not even sure what beach your on about, behind the power station is it? We have so many to choose from don't we.
As for the shift, most are just kids aren't they? We are at the same level we were at in the 70's are we not? And we have far bigger crowds even now with all the damage done. We hopefully won't lose anymore fans due to Tan as we've lost enough already. Your average bloke in his 30's or 40's doesn't stop supporting cardiff and then follows Swansea or vice versa does he? Unless of course he happens to be a complete c**t. So we will always have our proud presence down in PT, long may it continue. Sure, they will be countless more young jacks in the next 10 years but adversity is something we are very used to. It was always good to be unique and different by choosing ccfc back in the day.

I love it when non league teams get a big club in the FA cup. When the TV cameras visit their town in the days before the game the fans are ecstatic and bonded to the cause. These fans love their club for what it is and would never jump on a bandwagon of a successful nearby club.Sometimes you're ahead, sometimes you 're behind, the race is long and in the end it 's only with yourself .Bloobirds

Mums and Dads have got to put the issue of our controversial owner and the rebrand behind them and start going to support our club again. I take my 10 year old boy to every home game and to a lot of the away matches as well. He supports the Bloobirds and not the Jacks or a glory PL team. That said, he is the only junior ST holder in his class at school. His other mates support the big PL teams.

Its down to us parents to forgive, set an example and move on. I don't think that means we should forget though.

Good on the lad, he's unique for a start. I always loved the fact I was practically the only person in my school year who went to games....he will go a long way.... :bluescarf:
