Any mechanics on here?

Wed Aug 12, 2015 1:24 pm

My Smart four four started juddering and jerking and dropping revs whenever I slowed down towards the end of a journey. I thought it was the clutch which I had adjusted at a cost of £95 when that didn't work I got a new clutch put in and replaced the gear oil at a further cost of £625. I now have a new problem which seems to occur at low speed, the car conks out and there is no display of what gear you are in! Plus the judder is still there but not as bad! I read online that a dodgy battery can cause something like this so is that all it is? When I push the car a couple of feet I find that often fixed the co king out problem and restores the display. I still have to replace the brake pads, service and MOT it yet!

Please help! :ayatollah:

I'm no mechanic but that could be 1 of a 100 things. You probably need to have it plugged into one of them diagnostic things to find out the problem. That will tell you within a few minutes what needs sorting. It was easy to fix older cars, but these new type eco friendly type smart cars, are all about onboard computers ect, you need a degree in rocket science to fix them lol I'd say, your best bet is to take it to a decent garage with all the software jaz, and let them get to the bottom of it

Cheers, I took it to Halfords and they ruled out the battery, the starter motor and the alternator! There isn't much left! They advised to take it to their garage down by the City ground who will plug it in and I don't have to get it fixed there. If it turns out to be a 2 bob jay clip or something I'm going to be pissed!

Could be a fuel problem or air getting in and messing up the fuel & air mixture. As above get it plugged in but I'd stay away from Halfrauds. It's mainly run by teenagers who haven't got a clue.

You can buy a diagnostic kit yourself if you wanted to. I bought one for my Bmw @ £40. Works a treat , cheaper than getting it diagnosed at a garage. You can also get a little tester off eBay that'll test your battery, alternator & starter motor. Just clips onto the battery.

Yeah but the cheap ones will only tell you a limited amount of faults, great if it's a problem to do with the ecu but then it may not read other more complicated faults. This is the problem I had with my mates diagnosis machine. A decent one is about £6000, If you go to a garage they can charge about £80 just to plug it in!

I'm an electrical engineer, it Sounds like a possible battery fault, but could also be a build up of crap on the throttle body causing the revs to drop (but that's more mechanical side).

Find a volt meter, when the car is running the battery should read around 14v, when the ignition is off it should read 12v or above. Or one better get a battery tester and this will test the current carrying capacity of the battery and tell you if it's fucked or not basically.

Any other questions il try to help, cars arnt my bread and butter but ive got some vehicle experience on the electrical side of things

Cheers I appreciate the help.

Ruled out the clutch, the battery, the alternator, the starter motor is fine, really not sure what it could be. It has got something to do with the gears and something to do with moving at slow speeds or slowing down. The main symptoms are juddering and momentary drops in power on slowing or the gear box display disappearing and it coming out. Surely its some sort if electrical fault? Will get it plugged in Saturday.

Yeah sounds like your best shout, go somewhere reputable mind because I've known garages to just f**k off certain faults because they can't be bothered and just taken the money for diagnoses. as far as it dropping revs when you slow like I said it could be the throttle body.

I'm no mechanic mate but I'd have a big problem with spending over £700, still having the problem - albeit not as bad - plus a new problem that you never had previously. Personally, I'd be having a serious word with the original garage about the situation.

If you car has a slow speed sensor ,there usually on the gear box a faulty one would cause the problems your having ,the ford focus used to suffer with this and caused the same problems your having ,the throttle position sensor can cause problems if its got one but usually stalling when coming to a stop is an indicator that its faulty hope this helps.
