" NOT CONVINCING BUT IN THE HAT "

Tue Aug 11, 2015 8:54 pm

We picked a strong side tonight, so it looks like Slade is taking the League Cup seriously. And he will be happy that we progressed to the 2nd round in front of 6,314.

It was no great performance from City, with very few impressing. It took a great free-kick from Craig Noone bang on half time to win the game. Kenwyne Jones should have added a 2nd late on.

Kenwyne worked hard when he came on, and was crucial at defending set pieces. Other positives are hard to come by other than the performances of Sammy Ameobi and Craig Noone.

Gunnarsson, O'Keefe, Morrrison and Connolly weren't great. Wilson had very little to do. Don't even get me started on Revell!

Decent following by Wimbledon and they made some noise :thumbright:

Overall, it was great but good to see City in the next round. Would be nice to have a cup run as I think a mid-table finish is likely in the league :thumbright:

Next up QPR away on Saturday evening :ayatollah: :bluescarf: :bluebird:

Harris and Doyle are just not good enough ,Sammy and noone had a good game need to be more clinical ,Jones seems to be a bit fitter

John, James and O'Sullivan should be playing.

We won't see any of these home produced young players anywhere near the first team this season unless there is a major injury crisis at the club. There best bet for first team football is to arrange loan deals with league 1 or League 2 teams.

Slade is under pressure to perform and get the City into a position to challenge for a top six spot. He has too much to lose and will only trust a select group of payers within the squad who he deems to be experienced enough and prepared to give everything within the team ethos.

Because for the most part the game was dire,I was looking at Slade, a man whose is completely out of his depth, and the kindest thing we could do for him is put him out of his misery and sack him

The year we got to the final in this competition, we drew most of our games in 90 minutes.

on a night where many championship sides got knocked out by lower league clubs, the bluebirds win against a Wimbledon side who were up for the cup.

on to the second round.

A first-half free kick from Craig Noone has sent Cardiff City through to the second round of the League Cup with a 1-0 win over AFC Wimbledon at the Cardiff City Stadium.

Cardiff looked the more likely in the early stages as Aron Gunnarsson had a shot blocked before firing another wide, while Eoin Doyle headed over from a Sammy Ameobi cross.

The League Two side started to look more likely midway through the opening period as Adebayo Akinfenwa narrowly missed connecting with a Will Nightingale cross, while former Cardiff defender Jon Meades fired wide.

The Championship club started to pile on the pressure again as the half-time whistle approached, with Sean Morrison setting up Noone for a header, but his finish was just high.

Noone got another chance in first-half stoppage time though as he lined up a free kick after Doyle was fouled, leaving the winger the blast the ball into the top corner.

The hosts had a couple of chances to extend their lead early in the second period as Fabio saw a low strike saved before Alex Revell's effort was deflected wide.

Noone could have added his second of the night when he tried another long-range effort, but he could not trouble the keeper from 25 yards out.

Wimbledon started to show more intent as they tried to get back on level terms inside the final half hour, but Ben Wilson managed to stop Akinfenwa getting a shot away, while Morison cleared a Lyle Taylor cross before the big striker could get a touch on it.

Cardiff pressed hard in the final 10 minutes as they tried to put the win beyond doubt, knowing that a late Wimbledon goal would have taken the match to extra time, but Kenwyne Jones could not beat the keeper after Doyle flicked the ball on for the striker.

I disagree. He only stopped putting in 100% after Christmas, when he was told he was going to be forced out on loan. Him and Mason together could be a very good partnership. And there's no two I'd prefer as our starting strikers, who we currently have, than those two.

Exactly. Shocking results from the likes of Brentford, Blackburn, Bristol City and Bolton.

Revell was terrible last night, just as he was on Saturday. He offers absolutely nothing to our team. He may have won a few headers but he headed them to nobody other than the Wimbledon defence.

Think it's hard to judge Harris on that amount of game time. He didn't do well but wasn't on the pitch for long. If we have another lower league team in the next round, he should get more time on the pitch.

I'm on the fence about Doyle.

Jones did well last night.

I was surprised not to see some of the younger players involved yesterday. I thought Slade would have picked a mixture of youth and players who are on the fringe of the first team for a league game.

I'm not a Slade fan, but we have to be fair. This is his team now, he's had a full pre-season. Let's see where we are after ten games and then we can make 100% judgement.

Good point :thumbright:

Good to be in the Second Round, and we can look forward to the draw on Thursday night.
