" Gone by October? "

By Steve Tucker

Sunday 9th August 2015

The talk of the bar room this summer was dominated by one topic - just how many games do you give Russell Slade at the start of the season?

It sounds bad I know. Here is a man brought in to try to rescue things after the absurd reign of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, a man charged with slashing an out of control budget, but doing so whilst playing attractive football. Oh, and winning games at the same time.

When it comes to the budgeting, Slade has probably hit his targets, when it comes to matters on the pitch clearly he has not. Despite taking charge as early as October, Bluebirds performances last term remained on the whole dire and uninspiring.

Hence, the shouts of a summer evening of, ‘I’d give him five games then get shot, the new guy will need plenty of time.’ With even the most optimistic observer of Slade’s situation only able to offer a tentative, ‘He’ll be gone by Christmas.’

So where did this first real battle of the season leave those opinions? Against Fulham, Cardiff played better than had done before under Slade.

The first-half was marked by some sweet, flowing moves one feared did not reside in Slade’s locker, players in blue shirts looking hungrier, more focussed and more comfortable in possession than previously.

But Cardiff did only take a point, so whether it was enough to start silencing Slade’s doubters is arguable.

That bloke who said he would give Slade five games at the start of the season summed it up best perhaps after witnessing this clash, “Tell you what, I will give him five more games.”

After the Brighton game. We'll have the international break then to find a proper manager.

Am no Slade fan but get a grip, one game! Vast improvement and with a few additions that team will do well enough, it's a different team attitude and way of playing. :bluescarf: :bluebird:

At some point we have to draw a line in the sand and say this is where we make our stand. We can't keep changing managers/players/coaching staff and expect a stable club that will do well.

If you set someone up to fail then 99 times out of a hundred they will. So Slade is gone by October what then?

Forget talk of a Tony Pulis that time has past. We would probably ended up with another clubs also ran like Billy Davies for example and be no better off than we are now.

We have to accept that the club is being rebuilt and things will take time. I personally saw a lot of improvement yesterday and we seem to be travelling in the right direction. I see it as my duty to the club to back the manager and I will. :sladein:

No wonder managers and players turn us down. Some of our fans are atrocious. Turn on players and managers ridiculously quick.

Maybe Annis and his little group will be happy if Annis became manager of CCFC. Use of this forum as propaganda against managers is just wrong.

We're a broken club that went from playing defensive football under Malky to an attempt at attacking/flair football under OGS and then pragmatic, league football under Slade.

Give him a few seasons, get rid of the prima donna's wasting wages and build a core side of players who give 100% and determination then we can bring in higher profile players when we're a stable club again.

I'd rather see us stuck in mid table for the next 4 seasons then go up on the 5th year with a stabled, supported squad and then add some quality additions rather than us go up rushed, still a broken club and it all fall apart if we were relegated again.

Who is he going to be replaced by? Who on earth is going to want the job for low wages and no transfer budget?

Re: " Gone by October? "

Sun Aug 09, 2015 3:54 pm

We should of replace ole with Karl Robinson from mk dons he young hungry manager who on less wage work with small budget and plays attacking football think we stuck with slade who try play football but can't yes ball on floor but you got do something with it up tempo but he too scared to lose so play slow and keep ball with no purpose to go forward

Re: " Gone by October? "

I dont care that much about getting promoted. His football is complete shit.

We are not another stoke.

Re: " Gone by October? "

We played well yesterday against one of the favourites for promotion ,why would slade be gone by October? I seen us passing the ball around and not just hitting long balls like last season ,we will be in the mix for playoffs this season if we continue to improve

Fulham were awful yesterday there defence all over the place they finshed mid table at best we played on floor yes but with no tempo on moving ball quicker I don't think we be anywhere need top six without goalscorer and creative midfield player we look average yesterday

Favourites for promotion is stretching it a bit. They are about the same odds as Cardiff to go up.

Personally feel that he should be given until December. Then no excuses about having enough time etc. If we are in bottom half of league then Slade should be shown the door, but reckon he should be given at least a few months to prove his worth. :bluescarf:

I understand that RS is on £100 k per year and if that's true, one thing is for sure, you'll have to pay much, much more if you want a half decent manager to take his place.

Re: " Gone by October? "

Sun Aug 09, 2015 5:04 pm

And another issue is if he's sacked you have to have someone to replace him. Who would that be ?

He's under pressure after last year for sure, twelve games will determine his future, he had a decent start, time will tell !!!

Nothing against the man but totally out of his depth, we did ok yesterday but the truth is Fulham ( who weren't that good ) should have buried us, 1 nil and down and chasing the game they had at 2 easy chances, then it took one hell of a strike from Noone to save the day :sladeout:

Re: " Gone by October? "

Sun Aug 09, 2015 5:35 pm

Fulham won't be up there just like we won't.
The damage is done,Slade has to given a season minimum, chopping and changing doesn't work unless you are called Watford.
It could be far worse like playing Barnet and Plymouth every week.

Re: " Gone by October? "

Sun Aug 09, 2015 8:01 pm

At the end of last season I had no confidence in City improving this season. I saw the Watford friendly and we were playing the ball around on the floor, and we continued that yesterday especially first half. I'm cautiously optomistic for this season and as has been said who would we get to replace him. Tan is not going to pay big wages for a new manager, so I think we just need to support the team and maybe we will have a better season than we could have hoped for.

Re: " Gone by October? "

Sun Aug 09, 2015 8:10 pm

Well if we can get some wins, then no. I don't see why it's inevitable that he'll leave. The last thing we need is another manager, another team and further imbalance and inconsistency in this club.

Re: " Gone by October? "

Sun Aug 09, 2015 8:28 pm

He's done ok so far.
Feel a little sorry for him as he's paying the price for Ole's tenure.
That said, I don't beleive he's the man that will take City forwards and more importantly, upwards. Steady the ship yes. Other than that no.
Fans will stay away until performances improve.
The Karl Robinson shout was s good one. Say what you like about Franchise FC but they play a decent brand of football.

When you consider the mess Russell Slade had to sort out after Solskjaer and where we eventually finished in the league table i think that Slade has done a decent job.

Let's measure the man on the team's performances during the 2015-16 campaign and for the sake of the club let's give him our support no matter how long or short his tenure as manager may be.

As for the Fulham match i thought there were definite signs of improvement albeit with a couple of tweaks here and there namely the removal of Whittingham to the subs bench and a more experienced keeper would be a good start.

Success to the bluebirds :bluescarf:

Re: " Gone by October? "

I'm certainly no fan but give him a chance. It's only one game and there was an improvement from last season.

The problem if he were to be replaced later in the season is who would replace him. Anybody on a similar salary would be a lower league manager who again would be a gamble.
If Tan wants to speculate, I believe Big Sam is out of work!! Perfect!

The good news this season is, Slade says he's ready, happy, had a good pre-season, says he has been backed by Tan and says he believes we will be top 6 at least :ayatollah:
