Yesterday's attendance - some facts and figures

Sun Aug 09, 2015 8:46 am

Yesterday's official attendance of 15,429 was the smallest by some distance for a Football League fixture at the Cardiff City Stadium. The previous lowest figure was 17,686 for a 2-0 victory over Peterborough United on a Tuesday evening in February 2010.

The crowd against Fulham was the smallest for a Cardiff City home league game since May 2008, when 14,469 turned out at Ninian Park to watch the Bluebirds beat Barnsley 3-0 a fortnight before the FA Cup final.

Yesterday's attendance was Cardiff's lowest on the opening weekend of a Football League season since way back in August 1999, when 10,193 saw the Bluebirds draw 1-1 with Millwall in the old Second Division, or League One as it is now known.

Before the current season, Cardiff City had had home fixtures on the opening weekends of six other Football League campaigns since 1999. The attendances for the relevant matches were: 17,403 (v Wycombe Wanderers in 2001), 18,840 (v Stoke City in 2007), 19,749 (v Southampton in 2008), 22,264 (v Scunthorpe in 2009), 20,573 (v Sheffield United in 2010) and 21,127 (v Huddersfield Town in 2012).

The last time Cardiff had a smaller attendance than yesterday's for their first home league game of a season was a decade ago in August 2005. On that occasion, 15,231 turned out on a Tuesday evening to see the Bluebirds beat Leeds United 2-1 at Ninian Park.

Only Brentford and Rotherham United have so far attracted smaller crowds than Cardiff City on the opening weekend of the 2015/16 Championship campaign (Preston North End are playing Middlesbrough at lunchtime today).

Yesterday's official attendance of 15,429 was 3,628 down on the smallest crowd of the 2014/15 season (19,057 v Blackburn Rovers on a Tuesday evening in February 2015), 5,694 down on last season's average of 21,123 and 7,086 down on the equivalent fixture against Fulham in January 2015, when the official figure was given as 22,515.

Dave, Cheers for the facts :thumbright:

So was yesterday's attendance the lowest since the Ninian Park days?

It just shows and proves how many glory hunters we had and they've deserted in their thousands

Officially the lowest attendance for a Cardiff City Football League home game since May 2008, although many have suggested there were lower 'actual' attendances at various points last season.

Cheers Dave, very sad in my opinion.

I believe there was unofficially smaller crowds last season and if City do not do well this season,it will get lower.

Let's hope for a good season this season :thumbright:

Tut tut, you are perfectly aware of the numbers of old school who have had enough, I caved in and renewed but didn't go yesterday, so I was counted but seat empty.

Some have had enough of watching crap, being treated like crap and have decided the best option is to stay in a pub and choose their games, you can't blame them.

To me it felt a better atmosphere yesterday than 90% of last season's home fixtures. So maybe it's true cardiff not plastics which imo is better for the atmosphere and players pick up on it

Didn't look any different to the attendances last season, just showed how many season ticket holders stayed away and wasted their money. They'll come back at the first sign of success. I don't know what I'd do without football personally. :bluescarf:

Re: Yesterday's attendance - some facts and figures

Season ticket sales are down by 5,000 perhaps more from last season.

Of course some will argue that is a natural response for a club to have gone fro promotional contenders to mid table survival. The season that perhaps we should compare with is the 2007 against Stoke. This was the season it took off for us by reaching the FA cup final. That season money was on us finishing mid table after collapsing from the top of the previous season. Although we were not top last season our disappointing performance after our year in the top league is perhaps on a par with our collapse of the 2006 class.

So in 2007 we had over 18,000 with 8,000 ST holders. That is a walk up of 10,000. Yesterday we had over 15,000 with ST holders of 12,000. That is a walk up of 3,000. That is 7,000 less to the 2007 which is frightening. Fortunately we at least have a better bread and butter plate with 12,000 STs and this is why Tan had to turn us back to blue.

well it will be every week across all those with season tickets, doesn't mean to say they have wasted their monies purchasing.

and to be fair, how many st holders pass to friends when they are in a position of not being able to go.

Not a waste of money to the club, the point I'm making.

Neil, some fans will never return under Tan,plus many are to hurt by their club, but I reckon that's about 1,000 plus.

The majority were just glory hunters who did not care what we played in and deserved as soon as the team went downhill

Yep. There's only so much loyalty in football. 15,000 for the first game of the season is quite shocking, 17,000 will probably be our peak when the likes of Leeds come down. That attendances will only keep dropping if we're not in the promotion mix.

Annis, Surely it is worse for diehards to turn their back due to lack of success than it is for 'glory hunters' to do so. I go because I love my football even though it was dire last year I am ever the optimist. Football is a sport and i therefore results oriented, any team that loses badly regularly in any sport will lose support and that's a fact

that's correct, so we won't see an attendance below 10-11k due to st holders but last year there we games when we had crowds as actually attending below 10k, it was laughable hearing the announcement.

Even the die hards got fed up last year, and it won;t take too much or too long to happen again if as you say, we are not in the mix.
