Cardiff City unable to sign 'big name' players until David Marshall sold to West Brom
But the Cardiff City manager has revealed West Brom's interest could have cooled
Friday 7th August 2015
Cardiff City will not be able to sign any ‘big name’ players unless goalkeeper David Marshall is sold to West Brom, it has emerged.
It has been a quiet summer on the transfer front for boss Russell Slade with only two potential first-team players brought in, and it seems the Cardiff manager may be finding his hands tied by owner Vincent Tan’s cost-cutting at the club.
The Bluebirds and the Baggies are currently negotiating on a price for Scottish international Marshall, with West Brom reportedly having made an offer in the region of £5m for the player.
The Bluebirds want more than that for the man regarded by many as the best shot-stopper in the Championship and Slade has admitted all has gone quiet over the last few days with the Midlands club perhaps cooling on the deal.
But with the transfer window poised to shut on September 1, it has now emerged Slade will need the Marshall deal to go through if he is to add any real top quality to his side, who kick-off their league campaign at home to Fulham this weekend.
“It would probably be the case that to bring in a big player we would need to sell David Marshall,” said Slade.
“Of course you have to balance the books, don’t you? At the end of the day it’s about finances. It does not necessarily mean we can’t do any signings right now. It does not mean that. But obviously, if you were to target someone of a certain value we would have to look at that seriously in terms of the numbers. If the numbers were too high. If we don’t have that finance available then we would not be in a position to move on that despite finding someone we think might be suitable.”
When pressed on what the latest was on the potential Marshall deal, Slade admitted things had not progressed in recent days and hinted that West Brom might not be as keen to sign the 30-year-old as they had been
“There is not too much of a latest,” added Slade.
“There has been no dialogue in recent days between the two clubs so there is no more information. The numbers have to be right of we are going to lose him. We all respect him and want him to stay. It is financial though, and if the money is right we will have to consider it. The chairman is dealing with it and he will let me know. He has not spoken to me and it could be the case that the interest is cooling.”

I hope the interest is cooling!
Marshall is invaluable for me and I would ask what 'value' there is in getting rid of our best asset at that price?
A keeper of his stature certainly is pretty irreplaceable at our level and we all know there will be no 'big name' signing to follow!
Slade keeps telling us the current squad (including Marshall as No.1) is
"good enough for the top six"
It's cost-cutting time only and the only 'big' name we might attract would be the re-signing the biggest name of all, Jorn Schwinkendorf!

Sign any "big name" players!
Marshall will go on deadline day when it will be too late to buy any players, "big name" or otherwise.
Or at least that's what the club will claim.
If the right player is available now then he should be brought in straight away. That may mean a bit of a gamble on whether the Marshall deal goes through but obviously the club are not willing to provide ANY funds at all until a sale.
I thought there was a lot made about how Tan was going to be fully backing Slade when Slade returned from that trip to meet Vincent at the end of last season?
We can now see exactly how far that backing extends, or not as the case may be.
Nobody wants the club to continue splashing the cash left, right and centre but if they are serious about getting promotion this season ( which I honestly don't think they are) then surely some funds could be made available for some decent additions (or even just one decent addition!) to an under performing squad from last season.

I believed you
No more players coming in, just a few loans when that window opens up. They won't be up to much either.
Ah well clubs cutting its cloth and so are the 8000 ST who have not renewed, can't blame them.
If RS thinks we can be in the top 6 then he really is delusional

Take a look at the squad, every one of them are championship winners on their day, just want Slade to gel them together and use them to their full potential. And just need the supporters to back the players that are playing for the city.
not at all bothered about new signings, just the 27 potential heroes we already have.
