Friday 8th August 2015

The lead-up to Southampton’s Europa League qualifier second leg against Vitesse Arnhem in Holland was marred by violence.

A large section of the Arnhem town square had been transformed into a Southampton fan zone and for most of the afternoon the travelling support were enjoying the hot weather and mingling with Vitesse fans.

However, later in the afternoon the situation turned ugly at Korenmarkt when fighting broke out and bottles and chairs were thrown.

Riot police hold up their shields in a bid to calm the escalating problem in Arnhem

Southampton fans have gathered in the city ahead of the Europa League clash with Vitesse Arnhem

Riot police on horses had to use shields and batons to calm the escalating problem. At one stage horses were used to separate fighting fans and push them back.

It is understood that 50 Dutch fans and three English fans were arrested in the aftermath.

There were no problems in the Southampton fan zone. It is thought the violence broke out when Feyenoord fans clashed with Vitesse fans where Southampton supporters were mingling.

Southampton took their supporters out of the area and to the stadium via buses to keep them safe.

A club spokesman said: ’Southampton Football Club are aware of an incident away from the official fanzone in Arnhem. We are continuing to liaise with local police and will take relevant action against those involved.’

Any culprits involved in the violence will potentially be identifiable as many onlookers filmed events and took pictures on their smartphones.

The area was left strewn with debris — broken bottles, plastic cups and chairs — in the wake of the disruption. The extent of any injuries is not yet known.

This really should have been under the heading "English Supporters Caught Up In Dutch Football Violence". English fans abroad are just patsys these days and are nearly always the victims of ultra attacks. British supporters in the main are innocent families just travelling for the football, not looking to get involved in fighting.

I used to love it when I was younger,no mortgage and no wife. :D You don't see the danger when you're with your mates and looking for the other lads of rival clubs. It may have been wrong but it was a way of life for me in the 90's & 00's. Made some lifelong friends on the way. :bluebird: :happy1:
