Goalkeeper David Marshall looks set to be Cardiff City’s captain for the new season – but manager Russell Slade could think again if the Bluebirds make a good start to their Championship campaign.
Scotland international Marshall is suspended from the first three Bluebirds’ fixtures, and Slade is facing a dilemma on who will wear the armband then, starting against Fulham on Saturday week, before making a decision on the rest of season.
The City chief said: “There is every chance David will be captain again, but we have to look at the situation.
He is out for our opening Championship fixture against Fulham, plus two more games. Sean Morrison was captain (in the pre-season match) against Watford and he has done it when Aron Gunnarsson has not been available.
We will make a decision over the next few days.”
Lee Peltier, a former Leeds and Huddersfield skipper, is another contender for the captaincy over the first three fixtures, and Slade could yet rethink Marshall’s position if Cardiff start the season well.
Mark Hudson was appointed club captain, with Craig Bellamy team captain, in 2010 and that could work again if Marshall took the overall role, with an outfield player wearing the armband
Marshall, 30, was appointed skipper by former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after Hudson was sold to Championship rivals Huddersfield Town.
The former Celtic and Norwich ‘keeper has made 220 league appearances for the Bluebirds over the last six years and is under contract until 2018, despite attracting interest from Premier League clubs, such as Liverpool.
Marshall must serve a three-game ban after being sent off at Nottingham Forest in the final match of last season and that means Simon Moore will start in goal for the opening Championship match against Fulham on August 8.
Slade admits he is ‘extremely close’ to knowing his starting line-up for that clash, although he won’t make a final decision until next week

Sean Morrison for me. I know hes not everyone's cup of tea but hes a leader and i believe he will play every game. Wether that be with Connolly or Manga. Was Reading Captain to so has the experience. I believe a Captain should be the center half. Lead from the back. I do agree with Gunner as hes also a leader but i don't believe he will play every game. Think Dicacoi is in front of him now due to injury

I can't see Morrison playing over a fit duo of Turner & Manga so that would rule him out for me.
The captaincy genuinely worries me, Gunner would be an obvious as he captains his country, but is he going to be first choice?
Marshall as club captain with Turner (when fit & obviously playing) as team captain for me.

You want the guy who takes a piss in a fountain and shits in the street to be our captain?
My choice would be Gunnarsson, but if we want someone who will always be in the team leading by example, it's Manga.

Not Morrison, very questionable behaviour off the pitch.
Gunnar is captain of his country and would make a good captain for us too.

Gunnarsson is the obvious candidate, but it depends on whether Slade sees him as playing every game!
Giving a goalkeeper the captaincy however, is a waste of an armband for me!

Gunnar head and shoulders above anything else. A central midfield trio containing him Dikgakoi and Ralls would sure get the pulses racing!

I just can't Gunnar playing every game if it's 4-4-2.
Dikajoi is a better player if he can get/stay fit.
Peltier for me unless Manga's English is now good enough.

in that one shit he probably put in more effort than many of his team mates did last season.
he's the perfect choice

I think Peltier would be a good shout, if he was playing in the middle!
Should be a central defender or central midfielder IMO and I can see Ralls doing a good job in the future!

I was thinking Ralls earlier, but dont want any pressure on the young man. Got enough as it is. Mason said Ralls is very loud aswel

And you want someone who cant speak English tidy ? Brilliant
Theres not much proof if that was Morro or when it actually happened or even when. Just a bit of Twitter/internet nonsense

Turner for me. Gunnar is the obvious candidate but I consider that he should not be a regular starter. Gives away far too many needless free kicks ( particularly on goalkeepers), loses possession quite often and sometimes goes missing in games.
I would start Turner every game, always gives 100%, plays in a good position for a skipper and he appears to be a born leader.

Peltier or Manga

For me all the best captains are vocal both on and off the pitch, like Pearcy and Hudson, I can't remember hearing a peep out of Gunner or Marshall? At least Morrison is not shy in talking to the media
Wed Jul 29, 2015 8:18 pm
Manga or Turner. Don't think Gunnarson will play

Russell Slade to name Cardiff City captain for new season within next few days

Cardiff City manager Russell Slade has revealed that he will make a decision on his side's captain for the 2015-16 campaign within the next few days.
Goalkeeper David Marshall was given the Bluebirds captaincy last season, but the South Wales side struggled for outfield leadership and will have to play the first three games of the new campaign without the Scottish international due to suspension.
With Cardiff's opening fixture against Fulham just over one week away, manager Slade is now considering his options for the armband.
"There is every chance David will be captain again, but we have to look at the situation," he told reporters.
"He is out for our opening Championship fixture against Fulham, plus two more games. Sean Morrison was captain against Watford and he has done it when Aron Gunnarsson has not been available. We will make a decision over the next few days."
Ben Turner and former Huddersfield Town captain Lee Peltier have also been mooted as potential candidates for the role.

Ben Turner - has been at the club long enough, big defender, experienced and very realistic and honest

Personally I think it's a nothing issue. Fans nowadays are finding any negative they can I feel.
If Marshall had a captains armband on his sleeve does it stop turner organising the defence and barking orders? Does it stop Gunnarson rallying the troops in midfield and keeping people going?
Marshall knows the club well and shows a lot of passion towards us which is a great example to set so I'm not really bothered. Sometimes it's what the captain is like off the pitch that counts.
