" Which players impressed/Who needs to do more? "

BY TERRY PHILLIPS

Which players impressed? :ayatollah:
Mason and Anthony Pilkington - again. Mason has scored four goals, Pilkington three.

Joe Ralls, too, was energetic, aggressive and effective.

Kagisho Dikgacoi is effective in front of the back and he’ll be even better as fitness levels improve.

A word, too, for Simon Moore in goal. David Marshall misses the first three matches of the season because of suspension and Moore looks a solid, more than capable deputy.

Who needs to do more? :ayatollah:
Matt Connolly and Sean Morrison are building their partnership, but were opened up when Troy Deeney equalised. A simple high ball over the top and City defenders failed to deal with it!

Connolly is one of City’s most consistent defenders, but that partnership still needs work.

I’m still not certain about Scott Malone. Is he better than Fabio and Declan John? Malone, certainly, must do more to convince me.

What’s next for Russell Slade’s squad

Many of the players who weren’t involved v Watford will be at Cheltenham Town in a ‘reserve’ team on Wednesday. Goalkeeper David Marshall is due to play 90 minutes, while Matty Kennedy, Declan John and more are likely to be involved.

Strikers Javi Guerra and Adam Le Fondre are also making the hour-long trip to Gloucestershire.

Because Slade said he could get the best out of Whittingham, I was watching with interest last night, and in my opinion it was the same ineffective Whittingham on show

1st choice Marshall 2nd Moore

1st choice get Dec John back, turner, manga, Fabio (perhaps Morrison when a tall defence required)
2nd choice pelts, Malone Morrison etc

1st choice. Noone (I'd gamble on him), Dikcogoi, pilkington, Gunnar (perhaps Whitts depending on recent form)
2nd choice - Ralls, Harris Kennedy, o keefe,

1st choice, Ameobi, Jones and Mason. Be interesting to see what Jones and Ameobi would be like playing together up front. Mason could even play off them.

2nd choice -Doyle

3rd choice - macheda

Some players aren't on the list who I've forgotten and some are still yet to play for us. Just my opinion.

I don’t know what game Terry Phillips watched last night but here’s my view.

A very encouraging and entertaining performance and hopefully a sign of things to come.
Setup was 4-4-2. Would have prefered 4-3-2-1 with Ameobi on the left and Ralls in a 3 man midfield.

Moore – Always shouting at his defence which is something we haven’t had for years. Made a great save in the second half low to his left but flapped at a couple of crosses and seems reluctant to come off his line. Needs game time to improve.
Malone – One of the many plus point last night. Was great going forward linking well with Ralls and Mason and most of our attacks in the first half came through him. Defended well too.
Peltier – Seems to wander in field and was caught out of position a few times.
Morrison – Played Deeney on side for their goal but won his aerial battles. Needs to step up this season.
Connolly – Solid all round display. One of our best centre backs and needs a run of games.
Ralls – Fantastic performance, always looking for the ball and when he’s got it he always wants to play it forward. Even though Mason scored 2, Ralls was my MOM
Whitts – Always looking for the ball and had a huge influence on the game. Still doesn’t get forward enough in the danger areas for me.
Dikgacoi - Showed his quality and his presence is there for all to see. Will get better and fitter as the season runs on.
Pilkington – Had a quiet game but most of the play came down the other wing. A quality player who will have a huge part to play in our season.
Ameobi – Played as a striker last night which is not his best position. Struggled with his back to goal and his control let him down on occasions. He looks a massive threat with the ball at his feet running at the defense.
Mason – At last it seems he’s going to have his chance at Cardiff and if he produces his full potential he’ll score 20 plus this season and be MOM at many games. The only worry would be if we can keep hold of him come January.

Subs
O’Keefe – Looked solid when he came on and always wanted to be involved whoever had possession. A little terrier around the pitch.
Fabio – A late substitute and didn’t have much to do. Is always a threat going forward but needs to cut out the silly mistakes to get a run in the team. Personally I’d pick him ahead of Peltier.
Revel – Only had 10 minutes or so but I can see that being a regular occurrence this season but he did caused a few problems for their defence.
Noone – Similar performance to most of last season. Needs to produce more but he’s now got competition for his position so he’ll have to show his quality.
Doyle – Another late substitute but I’m sure he’ll score 10 plus this season but mainly from the bench.

All in all I was impressed with the fitness and performance of the whole team.

Was impressed by Moore, Mason and Ralls.

Dikgacoi needs to do more - having a player who can only last 65 minutes is not much use. How long does it take to get fit as a professional sportsman for Pete's sake? He's had over a year now to cut back on the pasties.

Ameobi looked either lazy or unfit or perhaps he's another one of those "languid" players like Kenwyne. Was blowing out of his backside after about 20 minutes. Hopefully better to come from him.

Other than that I thought we were ok without pulling up any trees. Watford weren't great mind and I think they may struggle this season if only because of the time it will take for their players to gel.

Whitts looked to be carrying a bit of timber to me  Perhaps he's been out with Dikgacoi a bit too often.

Jesus. Finally someone who is willing to give the positives about everyone. I agree with almost all of what u said there. Spot on. Only bit I disagree with it that I would actually have peltier over fabio but I can understand why you'd say different.
