SPIRIT OF THE TROOPS
By Steve Tucker
Saturday 25th July 2015
A trip away like the Bluebirds had in Holland is very much about uniting the group and bringing people together. Russell Slade was keen to point out how such group gatherings become virtually impossible once the season is underway. It was telling that the talk in the Cardiff camp was often about how flat things were last year in the dressing room.
How divided a place that was. Well, forgetting matters on the pitch for the moment, Slade does seem to have gone a long way to turning that around right now.
The losing of some players and the bringing in of his own has surely helped that process, but Slade himself, far from being an object of doubt as he often is viewed by those outside looking in, does seem to have galvanised the players about him. There seems a genuine like and respect for the man and his methods amongst the players. Whether this new found esprit de corps makes any difference on the pitch remains to be seen, but it surely cannot do any harm.
IS THIS PILKINGTON’S SEASON
Three goals in his last three games, the one against Rotterdam a classic strike, OK, they are only preseason friendlies, but it still sounds good. Anthony Pilkington is having a good summer, Cardiff can only hope he now goes on to have a good season because he just night be a big player for them. His debut in the Welsh capital last year was a write off.
Just as he looked to be settling he was out for five months with a hamstring injury and barely back for a few cameos at the latter stages of a sorry campaign. It’s no wonder when I spoke to him in Holland he said Cardiff fans had not seen the best of him yet. It’s true, the guy has class, that has always been recognised, if he can stay injury free now and get a run of games the Bluebirds look set to benefit. It’s little wonder Russell Slade describes the Pilkington renaissance as like having a new signing.

I was pleased with Matt Kennedy's comments in the week regarding how it appears that there is a renewed team spirit which is vital. Really looking forward to the new season now and I think the QPR trip is going to be a corker.
