Russell Slade's Cardiff City squad have received and early season blow as star defender Bruno Manga has been carried in a stretcher after suffering a knee injury

Cardiff City star Bruno Manga has suffered an injury scare ahead of the new season.

The towering centre-back , voted player-of-the-year last season, has been carried off after suffering a knee injury during the pre-season friendly against Sparta Rotterdam in Holland.

Manga, who scored in Tuesday's win over Israeli outfit Ironi Kiryat Shmona, went down injured 20 minutes into the match and had to be helped off and eventually carried away in a strecher, as he could not put his foot to the floor.

He was immediately assessed by Dutch medics but at the moment it's unclear whether he's heading to hospital.

Writing in our live blog of the match, Steve Tucker said: “Manga was carried to the side by Sean Morrison and the trainer. He stood with the trainer on the side of the pitch.

“He was gently limping back around the pitch with two guys supporting him before being brought around by the stand where I am sitting on a stretcher.

"The Dutch medical team are assessing it now. There are a few language problems I’m told.

"It's unclear if he's going to hospital or not. One person said maybe other said, no, it's not that serious."

Very bad news if it's serious, especially with Turner out for the start of the season too. If we had an easy start it wouldn't be to bad, but we couldn't have really had a harder start. And he is central to our success this year.

The real concern is that Bluebirds centre half Bruno Manga had to be helped from the field. He was unable to put any real weight down on his foot and was carried around the field on a stretcher.

Could be a massive blow ahead of the season.

The seriousness of the problem or how Manga might be out is not yet known, but manager Russell Slade is fearing the worst:

“It’s devastating to be honest, the thought of losing a player like Bruno,” said Slade.

“We will have to see. The medics said it is the lateral side of the knee. But Bruno heard something when it happened. I’m not sure if he went up to compete for the ball and just landed awkwardly or if it was a change of direction.

“The start of the season now has to be a doubt for him I’m afraid, I’m afraid it just has to be. It is a worry, but we will find out more next week.”

Since arriving from French club Lorient a year ago for a fee of 5 million euros, 27-year-old Manga has proved a massive presence in the Cardiff defence losing him ahead of the new campaign would prove a massive blow for the Bluebirds.

It's the latest blow in the Cardiff City centre half department, with Ben Turner already missing the start of the season after having ankle surgery.
