Cardiff City have received NO bids from MLS for Kenwyne Jones as Russell Slade expects him back for season kick-off

Wednesday 22nd July 2015

Cardiff City's top-scorer last season has been linked with a move away all summer but now his boss has set the record straight

Kenwyne Jones will report back to Cardiff in the coming weeks
Kenwyne Jones will head back to Cardiff City as soon as he's finished his holiday – insists manager Russell Slade.

The Bluebirds boss also says he knows of no bids for his star striker and certainly none from the MLS.

Reports around the USA have linked Jones to Columbus Crew and other MLS franchises, while he spent the last few weeks there starring for Trinidad and Tobago in the Concacaf Gold Cup.

The 30-year-old Bluebirds top-scorer has been expected to leave since spending the end of last season on loan at Bournemouth but Slade insists he has big plans for the giant frontman.

He said: “We’ve had no interest in him or enquiries. None that I know about anyway!

“I did not even know he had even been linked with the MLS."

Jones' Trinidad team exceeded all expectations by making the quarter final of the showpiece tournament and featured in one of its most stunning games, a 4-4 draw with Mexico.

But Slade expects him back in plenty of time for the Championship kick off on August 8.

The Bluebirds boss confirmed: “He’s due back with us soon as he’s had a bit more time as he’s only just finished playing internationally.

“He’s had time with his family, I don’t think there should be any issues fitness-wise and he will soon be back with us.

“He’s got a year left on his contract so quite frankly he is our player.”

But with Slade told to cut costs by Cardiff owner Vincent Tan and Jones reportedly one of the highest paid players at the club, Slade admitted his hand might be forced if there was interest shown in the striker.

The Cardiff boss added: “It’s a crystal ball situation right now, if someone comes in and offers £5m for him I’m not sure we would turn it down.

"That’s the way it is, everybody has a price. Right now we are looking to keep a hold of Kenwyne. He is a Cardiff City player.”

I cant see anyone in Europe paying his wages, somewhere like MLS would be ideal, or some random Chinese team that seems to pop up giving big wages

I agree, no British club would be mad enough to, other than MLS teams I don't know who would have that kinda money to throw away.

He is still a very good player at this level and tbh I rather keep him then getting someone else in unless they are proven goalscorers at Championship level.

I know, its a shame it's so high, a bit lower and we have got a great championship striker.

But next summer he is going to be the very first straight out of the door.

Yes he most likely will, contract is up and I can't see the club renewing it.

Get him gone, NOW

With all the money that we have saved on wages, we can afford to keep him, without his goals and defending last season, we could quite easily have been down near the bottom of the table, even been relegated

Agree we would have had a much different season without him, we need him for now.

What worries me is that he hits the ground running, scores a lot of goals through August and THEN someone buys him. In my opinion, if he isn't gone by August 8th then we should say we are keeping him til the end of his contract. He is still a good player, even if he is being payed double what he should.

Exactly!
Some people are acting like it comes out of their own wages.

Couldnt agree more, his wages are certainly on the high side but people forget that he was our topscorer and was great defensively from corners/set pieces. He's never been a player to run the channels looking to outrun defenders in his whole career so i'm not sure why people expect him to do that now!
Wages aside, i would certainly keep him unless we can replace him with a more mobile striker. most strikers who would play in this division and score 15-20 would demand a large trsnsfer fee or large wages so it's a no win situation for Slade snd thr club.

Also, if he does stay does that mean that the other striker apparently lined up is not going to happen?

Even if he was on £20,000 a week, I'd keep him.

It's a shame his wage is so high, because he's a great goalscorer at this level - and sometimes our best defender.

I quite like Kenwyne

But he costs us with match day bonuses about £45,000 a week

£37,500 a week even if he does not kick a ball

If we had a like for like replacement (a target man) . Can someone name a player they would like to see here.Who would do as good a job as KJ that would offer us better value,in the mad inflated world of professional football ?
If someone comes in on a free transfer his wages would be high probably £25k a week and a signing fee of about £ 250k , if a transfer fee was paid say £1m the player would want at least 20k a week on at least 2 year contracts. So both them scenarios KJ is cheaper .
Just a thought because I can't think of anyone that'll do a better job than him for the money we can offer.

Bring him off the bench and he will score important goals for us as he did last season.

Indeed he will, I remember him coming on against Colchester in the cup where we had a corner he scored with a header before even using his feet, within seconds he made a impact.

Does'nt Tan co own an MLS team. Ca'nt we just transfer Kenwynne to them, or is that too simple?
