According to Steve Tucker, City are still interested in signing Johnny Russell, he also says City are close to signing a striker and a youngster is coming in.
Cardiff City Transfers: Johnny Russell could 'go to the wire' but experienced striker and youngster deals are close
Cardiff City are prepared to fight to the very last day of the transfer window to land number one target Johnny Russell.
Tuesday 21st July 2015
The 25-year-old Derby winger has been pursued by Bluebirds’ boss Russell Slade all summer and we can reveal Cardiff tabled a bid for the Scottish international - only to see it rejected by the Rams.
WalesOnline understands the two clubs are currently “miles apart” when it comes to a valuation for the player but Cardiff plan to persevere – right up until the moment the window slams shut at 6pm on Tuesday, September 1.
Russell’s preferred option is to stay at Derby and impress new manager Paul Clement as the East Midlanders hope to banish the heartache of missing out on promotion for the last two seasons.
And the tricky wideman is going the right way about doing that, scoring his second goal of pre-season at Northampton last Saturday.
Ironically he will spend this week about 45 minutes away from the Bluebirds, as he's based in Arnhem on Derby's pre-season camp, while Slade's men are in Ermelo.
While Derby intend to hold onto Russell, there is hope in the Cardiff camp that the situation might change if more players of the calibre of recent signings Tom Ince and Darren Bent arrive at the Ipro Stadium in the coming weeks.
A source within the Cardiff camp revealed that the club is keeping a “watching brief” on the Russell situation and that an improved offer for the player could be forthcoming if his status at Derby was to change. The source admitted things “could go to the wire.”
Who else is coming in?
The Bluebirds are also in a tug-of-war with two other clubs for an unnamed striker.
The experienced frontman is said to be close to putting pen to paper with Cardiff and would add to Slade’s already rich stable of attackers ahead of the new campaign.
Another "young player" is also on the Cardiff radar and could be snapped up soon, we also understand.
So far this summer, the Bluebirds have signed centre-half Semi Ajeyi on a free from Arsenal and Sammy Ameobi on a season loan from Newcastle.
They kick off their Championship campaign at home to Fulham on Saturday, August 8.

Hahaha, the best non-sweary critique of our strikers I've seen.
Like I said, the longer Kenwyne Jones stays with us, the more I like the idea of having him lead the line either on his own or with Doyle up top as his strike partner.

And it's Slades fault our squad is too big? I think you've got a short memory mate, ogs is to blame for this mess of a squad.

Seen striker Dom Dwyer being mentioned on rumour sites, has a good record. another one on the linked to us list.

People seem happy with the squad, to me it looks a total mess.
While I don't like Slade I really thought he would have ripped this squad to bits and started again to get players who fit into a 4-4-2 he likes.
Or maybe he will surprise and not use the 4-4-2.
At the moment I don't really see where the squad is going or how they fit into a starting 11

I done think the squad is a mess with regards to personnel. They lack leadership, guile and consistency but I wouldn't necessary blame the players.
We have too many players and that is not Slades fault.
I don't think he can Do it at this level but I am sure decent coaches and a manager could get our squad very competitive.
A little more pace and guile and a consistent playing style.. As well as trimming the squad and i think we'll be ok.
Give him til November.

I've never heard of him

Dwyer spent his youth with Norwich City, and King’s Lynn Community Football, an elite program affiliated with a few professional clubs in England. He studied at the College of West Anglia from 2006 to 2008. During this time, he broke his right foot three times and as a consequence was told by doctors that he would never be physically capable of playing at a professional level. From there, he was given an opportunity by scout Joe McLaughlin of Soccer Icon USA to get a sports scholarship to study for a college degree in America,[5] Dwyer has said that he accepted the offer to get a free degree and that at the time he had given up on the dream of a football career.
Dwyer moved from England to attend Tyler Junior College in Texas, where he won two national championships and was the national junior college player of the year after scoring 37 goals as a sophomore. After two years at Tyler, he made the move to the University of South Florida, where he played in 2011.
