Joe Mason

Can someone explain the Joe Mason loving at the moment ? is it just because of the cup final goal ?
I could swear some people on here believe hes our Messiah this year and are expecting a big season.
hes played around 30 games in the last 2 years. Wheres all this confidence came from ? i didnt think he did a lot to show the enthusiasm at the end last season. he only averages 5/10 goals a season.
my personal opinion is that hes still to weak although he is inteligent positionally, i think it will mean the centre of the park being over run again. to much pressure on the midfield 2 when he plays as the 10 behind a striker.
im hoping the box to box midfielder is player to replace Joe to toughen us up in the middle of the park but cant see Slade changing from his beloved 4/4/2 or 4/4/1/1 however you look at it.
I know ill get shot down by a few but interested in why they rate Joe so highly ?

He' an intelligent striker who showed promise before he git injured a few years ago, finished the season strongly last year and has hit the ground running this time around. :ayatollah: :sladein:

Clever movement, good first touch, links well between the lines, intelligent on the ball and very composed in front of goal would sum up his strengths for me. Given a fresh start like he has this pre-season and with a run of games he has the potential to be a big player this year. Confidence is another biggie and although it's only pre-season and we've played lower league opposition getting two goals in two games won't do him any harm at all. Last year we lacked movement and creativity, with Joe playing between the lines our central midfield will actually be able to look to play forward rather than sideways and backwards.

Because he's a joy to watch, his movement, touch and work rate are top notch. He just hasn't been given a proper break like you said he's not started many games and those who can see what a quality footballer he is know that given the chance he could do very well at city. Simple as that, haven't heard anyone over hyping him just a bit of faith in quality makes a change from the usual bashing they get on this forum :ayatollah:

Exactly, he's been here for a number of years and we all hope this is the season that makes him the no1 striker at the club. :bluebird:

I feel exactly the same as you, when it comes to Joe Mason. Yes, he sometimes is a very intelligent striker and a very good finisher. But to me, he has quite a few more bad attributes than good. He is extremely weak, he hasn't got much pace, he isn't very committed, his work rate is poor, he drifts out of games too much and too easily and he also doesn't score enough goals. If we want to achieve anything this season we need a better striker than Mason. A player who can create goals and score them, one that works his ass off, has pace, is strong, can also player up front on his own and is far more consistent than Joe. Personally, I think Joe seems to do better when he comes on as sub, so I would have him on the bench rather than starting every game. I think Eoin Doyle should definitely be a starter every game for us, unless we bring in 1 or 2 strikers, that are better than him. Doyle should always start ahead of Joe, as I think towards the end of last season, because of a good run of games in the side, he started to show some really good signs of him becoming a very good striker for us and it certainly helped him and especially the team, when he started scoring the goals. I wouldn't want to sell Mason at the moment, by any means, but if we were to receive a bid of £2m plus for him, then that kind of money would be too much for us to turn down. If we did want to sell Mason and regardless of the price that we deem acceptable for us. We should include a sell on clause in the deal, of at least 25% as I can see that he has some potential in him. But for us to have a productive season, we need players that are already established and they have got the quality to deliver straight away. We can't include a few players in the team who may or may not have the potential to be a quality player in a year or so. So for me I just can't see Joe being the answer to our striking problems and I can't see him scoring 15+ goals in one season. Whatever or whoever the players are that line up for us for each game, they will have my 100% full backing and support.

So, Up the City, Come on the City and the players, please some of you prove me wrong.

Because he's the best striker we currently have do t understand why we loaned him out last year?

Re: Joe Mason

best striker ? no chance sorry
Guerra, Le Fondre, Jones, Doyle all better than Joe as a striker.
But none of these play the 10 role like Joe is able to is my belief

My thoughts exactly. Looked like he might start to fulfil that potential before that injury a few seasons back. I remain unconvinced but will back whoever starts up top for us. Good to see him scoring in pre-season but there's a huge difference between scoring against Forest Green Rovers and Shrewsbury then the Championship opposition.

Loved to be proved wrong...but if he is our number1 striker ..we are moving backwards at a rate of knots :sladeout:

Even Cornelius looked good pre-season.

Nothing against Mason, happy to see him given a chance but if the old rumours were true then anything above 1m id be very happy with.

Guerra I pointless Disscussion. As he clearly won't eve play for us.

Le Fondre used to be good but was a joke last year absolute shit if we get £1mill for him we should be happy I like Jones a lot and if we keep him would like to see him up top with Mason but he I one lazy fucker and I don't rate and I'm sorry but Mason is better than him in every department, finishing, control, dribbling, positioning, passing etc.

No he did not he might have score but he looks absolute shit in terms of everything else.

Re: Joe Mason

I do not understand it either. He has now been in the Championship for 4 years and made little impact or progress. Yes, he is intelligent but he is also slow and too weak. He has not improved his strength, which could easily do with a little bit of application.

Bolton obviously did not rate him as highly as they do Le Fondre.

He needs to improve significantly this year. He used to have the impact that we need up front and make a challenge. Why people are expecting more of him I do not know.

As far as his performances at the end of last year were concerned, those games are about as meaningful as the current ‘friendlies’.
