STRIKERS

Sun Jul 19, 2015 2:47 pm

Things could be better at the back and in midfield but generally I think we have the players in those areas to compete well next season. However it's as plain as day that we need a couple of top notch strikers. It looks like Le Fondre and Guerra are going as well as Velikonja. I think Kenwyne could do a job but we will probably offload him too if we can just to get his massive wages off the books. Personally I wouldn't keep Revell or Macheda, for me they offer very little and are not the answer to our problems. Basically I would only keep Mason and Doyle. So if Tan is serious about promotion he needs to get rid of all those strikers and their wages and splash the cash on two top quality strikers, both with pace as we have none up front. There must be foreign players within our reach who could do a job here or some good quality loans (like Bamford at Boro last season). If we could do this I think we wouldn't be far away.

Mason and Macheda did OK IMHO.
Bigger problem was our outclassed central midfield .
Centre half a looked rusty as did Peltier and John.

We have never really replace Bothroyd or Chopra since they left.

Miller could not score, Maynard got injured and then there was Cornelious.

If we got 2 top quality strikers then yes we would be up there. Personally I feel that Macheda now needs to show his potential for us to stand a chance. I do believe Doyle will come good but hi along will not be enough. Of course we also need that midfielder as well.

So are you saying the exact opposite to me? You think we need to strengthen at centre half, full back and centre midfield but we don't need new strikers. It's all about opinions I suppose. I said I'd keep Mason but we desperately need some quality to play alongside him. Macheda is too slow and too lazy but he does have a good knack of finishing. However, if you play him alongside Mason it's an attack without pace, an essential tool in my opinion. It makes us too easy to mark, too predictable. You said our central midfield was outclassed but they weren't in the first half. I thought we had the better of them in the first half and I suppose the point I am making is that if we added two quality strikers to that first half team we would be equipped to challenge near the top. Yes you pointed out that "Centre half a looked rusty as did Peltier and John" but we know that will improve with more games. Peltier is a decent defender as is Manga, Turner, Connolly and I thought Ajayi looked promising too. Yes, it would be nice to find a midfield general (their lad Ryan Woods looked ok) but in my opinion and given the choice I would sign two quality strikers above anywhere else.

It is common knowledge that the club are trying to offload the 3 best strikers in Jones, Le Fondre and Guerra.

We desperately need a proven goalscorer as I can't see Doyle/ Mason/Macheda & Ravell score more than 30-35 goals between them.

No.
I was commenting on yesterday.
Overall, this is what I think....
At the moment I don't think we can expect anyone to come in.
No I don't think we need a centre half Turner and Manga are a top 6 pairing and Morrison and Connelly of GE stays are very good cover and also our full backs are ok. , I'd expect Peltier to do better than yesterday.
We've now got 4 decent wide men and still have competition in the middle. However yesterday I wasn't impressed here. Getting the right mix is a tough one for Slade.
As for strikers, we won't get another until at least 2 of Guerra, Jones and LeFondre leave. Their combined wages must be crippling.
If they go then yes we may get one and it would be good, however I'm not that disappointed with Doyle, Mason and Macheda with Revell to give a different option.

Another decent one would be good or maybe one of the 3 outcasts will sort themselves out and play their part ?

Ok, fair enough. You confused me though as I was talking about what we need in my opinion for the season ahead and not about the Shrewsbury game. Based on that game we are in deep trouble!! But thank goodness friendlies count for very little.

No problem.
I guess I did go off on a bit of a tangent.

It's still possible for any of our strikers to shine.

My bet to shine would be Mason, but I wouldn't be surprised to see Macheda or Doyle score a load given decent service

I would love to see all our strikers shine and I hate criticising any of our players and rarely do but from what I've seen I don't think we have enough pace up front Also, nobody seems effective at holding the ball up (essential to be able to build moves) and I don't think we have goals up front apart from Mason who I feel will have a good season. Having said all that I think it's disappointing what has happened with Le Fondre and Guerra. ALF is a proven goal scorer but if he wants out he will always be unhappy here and that has affected his goal scoring record. At least he was given a chance, but Guerra is a real puzzle. Ole bought him and never played him and Slade never played him. I don't know why because the lad obviously has some quality, but there we go. Fingers crossed for a good season.

Macheda will be lucky to get double figures.

mason I think may get around 10/15 if he has a good year, although he adds alot more to the team.

Revell will be lucky to get five

Hopefully Doyle hits 20+ or were guna be struggling and looking to the midfield for goals and since whitts has stopped banging them in I don't think we've had a high scoring midfielder for a few years now?
