Gunnarsson This Season!?

Thu Jul 16, 2015 9:53 am

Firstly i believe in this massively and is an absoloute key point to success this season and why we failed a lot last season. This point is that we lack a midfielder who goes box to box with energy, someone who will get in the opposition box get higher up the field chipping in with goals and creating them and linking midfield to attack getting us on the front foot.

Last season whitts was the man who had to play this role but simply did not deliver and underperformed massively imo, too slow and no engine to drive us forward and get himself box to box, leaving gunnarson the more defensive role in slades formation.

But what if gunnarson was given whitts role last season? And say dikgachoi was our defensive minded midfielder, this could work imo. Gunnarson has proved he can get drive forward and in the past has often found himself in the opposition box scoring goals. And if gunnarson isnt given this role then we need a new signing for this role for us to stand any chance of success this season as whitts and gunnar partnership last season failed massively last season so change there is key.

Opinions???

I agree that Gunnar and Whitts together last season just didn't work, which was something that everyone but a blind person ( and Russell Slade) could see.

I'm not sure that Gunnar is quite the player he was in the promotion season and I'm not sure why. Obviously he's had injuries and maybe as you say he has not been used in a way that utilises his best abilities.

But the reason why he hasn't been used most efficiently is still unfortunately managing the football club so I see nothing changing much this season.

I expect him to be selected for every game when he is fit and not suspended (together with Whitts) and I expect our season to follow along similar lines to last season.

Are you serious?
That wasn't Whittinghams role at all last season!! His role was slightly deeper than Gunnarsson. He wasn't meant to be a box to box player & never will be. He's never played that role & I doubt he's ever been asked to.

I agree that that's the sort of player we could do with though.

I don't know how such a limited player made it as a professional

Terrific player, so important to us. However we wont see him at his best until he gets partnered with someone better in midfield. I would love to see him and Ralls together in central with Digkachoi behind. Then we'll see the Viking go!

Oh come on Woody Whittingham isn't that limited, he's still got some good points. :sladeout:

Yes, he has somewhere. But game after game, it is getting extremely hard for most people to list those good points. However, if he is used further up the pitch then we may finally see those good points come to the surface. Unfortunately for me, I think he is past it and should be on the bench rather than starting every game. Don't get me wrong he is still a terrific passer, a good set piece taker - however at times last season, a lot of his set pieces, were the poorest that I have ever seen them) and he pops up now and then with a goal. I think if Whittingham is going to be in the team every week then he must play further up the pitch or if he is to continue in the centre alongside Gunnarsson, then a 3rd midfielder has to be added to the central midfield, hopefully Dikgacoi. Which of course would mean us moving away from the 4-4-2 formation that Slade loves to possibly a 4-3-3 or another formation with three in the middle of midfield.

Your assuming Slade would actually play his signing....

We had a box to box midfielder until the beginning of the week by the name of Adeyemi...

I think he meant Gunnarsson Geggs! I was just winding him up for being myopic!

Its all about opinions but i don't think they were expected to burst late into the box with Slades tactics last season. Both sat, 2 strikers with 2 wingers should have created and scored more. The paltry goals and assist from the wingers tells me Slade wants them gone.

In Malkys 442 the wingers were no more than wide midfielders who tucked in to support at every opportunity to make a solid 4 or even 5 in the middle, so if Gunnar went into the box there was cover. The amount of times we got caught on the counter with Ole told Slade we need protection for the back 4.

Ameobi is a 433 forward so I am waited with baited breath what formation Slade comes up with.
