CONFIRMED DALMAN NEGOTIATED/CLOSE TO MISSING OUT

Fri Jul 10, 2015 5:21 pm

Cardiff City fans have delightfully received Sammy Ameobi as their latest star signing but did you know the Bluebirds almost missed out on the deal?

WalesOnline understands Slade himself was not present at the meeting in London, he was instead in Leicestershire overseeing the Bluebirds preseason training camp, but that his input did play a major part in changing Ameobi’s mind.

Details have emerged of how, at the 11th hour, Cardiff City hijacked a deal that would have seen Sammy Ameobi join Championship rivals Wolves instead.

The 23-year-old Newcastle winger signed a year-long loan deal to join the Bluebirds for their forthcoming campaign this week, but WalesOnline can now reveal how perilously close the Welsh club came to losing out on him.

Ameobi signed a new contract on Tyneside at the start of the week, but had been told by Magpies’ boss Steve McClaren he could go out on loan to a second-tier club for next season.

The player and his representatives had spoken first to Bluebirds’ boss Russell Slade in the Welsh capital, but then also travelled to hold talks with Wolves manager Kenny Jackett about the prospect of joining the Midlands club.

We understand Ameobi originally decided it was a move to Molineux that would suit him best and was set to travel to sign for the club.

The news sent shockwaves through Cardiff City with Ameobi high on Slade’s wish-list this summer and the club hierarchy convinced they had done enough to sell the club to him.

Alerted by the news, the Bluebirds immediately contacted Newcastle to find out more information and then got in touch with Ameobi and his agents themselves.

It is believed, as Ameobi’s car headed towards Molineux, he was persuaded by the Bluebirds to stay on the M1 and instead travel to London to meet representatives from Cardiff at a crunch face-to-face meeting. Here, during frantic negotiations, the player was persuaded to ditch the idea of joining Wolves and sign on the dotted line for Cardiff instead.

WalesOnline understands Slade himself was not present at the meeting in London, he was instead in Leicestershire overseeing the Bluebirds preseason training camp, but that his input did play a major part in changing Ameobi’s mind.

Ameobi then travelled back to Newcastle and, after putting his affairs in order, departed for Wales first and then to Leicestershire to hook up with his new club. The deal to bring him to the Welsh capital was revealed by his sister, Titi, when she posted a photo of him leaving home on social media.

The former England Under-21 international is set to play a big part in Cardiff’s forthcoming Championship season under Slade and has already outlined his aim is to help fire the Bluebirds back into the Premier League.

It has proved the signing of the summer for Cardiff so far, but, if not for desperate last-ditch efforts by those in charge at the club, the Bluebirds would almost certainly have lost out to Wolves for Ameobi’s signature.

Slight contradiction in earlier post on here where it was stated wolves wouldn't agree to his demands that's why came here? And we were mad to except the conditions!! But glad for whatever reasons he's here!

Allan, he is here because Dalman got involved and we are offered virtually guaranteed Championship football as long as 100% fit :ayatollah:

Unbelievable. There is a thread on this forum on how our club are rewarding season ticket holders, with free tickets to watch a pre season friendly against premier league opposition. An action we should all be applauding and commending our club for.

instead people are either squabbling over how much input our manager had in a loan signing, or creaming over a former player who selfishly walked away from this club, when his preasence for a season in the championship would have made a serious impact on a promotion push!

and you're trying to tell me this forum hasn't got an anti slade/tan agenda!!!

pathetic and shaming.

Just in case you hadn't noticed, this a forum and every forum is a chance for people to exchange their views and opinions with others. Forums have different topics of conversation too if you look closely. People have already said that the club have done well by offering season ticket holders free tickets for the Watford game but that is a different topic.

If you're looking for a place where everyone is happy and agrees with everyone else then perhaps a forum isn't for you

The poster was making a more than valid point, that the leading lights on this forum, I.e those that start most of the threads seem to be following a negative rather than positive agenda against the club. I, like many others I suspect am getting a bit fed up of it. As I would'nt continue to bother having conversations in the pub with Cardiff supporters who were continually slagging the club for no good reason, so I don't think that many like myself will continue posting on a site that continues to put a negative slant on everything positive that the club is trying to do. This will just result in a forum that has an agenda which is seen as against the club and so will be filled with that form of poster. If that's what the forum owner and his minions want, then fair enough.

Couldn't help but laugh reading that, after meeting with slade he was set to join wolves, really does say it all for me.

Dead right. Quite a lot of the "high profile" posters on here profess to love the Club then seek every opprtunity to undermine everything the manager and in particular the owner, try to achieve.
