Cardiff City launch fresh bid to land Derby County winger Johnny Russell

The Bluebirds had seemingly missed out on signing the Scotland winger, but they remain optimistic they can land one of their top targets

Johnny Russell has wowed the Derby fans with his goal scoring prowess

Cardiff City have renewed their interest in signing Derby County winger Johnny Russell, believing they can still land one of their number one targets of the summer.

The 25-year-old Scottish international was high on Bluebirds’ boss Russell Slade’s wanted list, but it looked like he had missed his chance earlier in the transfer window with Rams’ manager, Paul Clement, insisting Russell was not for sale. It led to Cardiff cooling their interest in signing the Glasgow-born player and looking around at other potential targets.

But with Derby announcing the signing of wideman Tom Ince from Hull a week ago, the Bluebirds are set to once more test the resolve of the East Midlands’ club to hold onto Russell.

Derby County forward Johnny Russell is reportedly a transfer target for Cardiff City according to the Derby Telegraph.

The Bluebirds enquired about the availability of the Scottish international last month but were informed by the Rams that he was not for sale.

However, after Derby swooped to land former England U21 winger Thomas Ince from Hull, it appears that they may have changed their stance on Russell.

As the Derby Telegraph understands the 25-year-old could now be made available and the Rams will part company with the player if an offer in the region of £1 million is received.

Russell, who originally joined Derby as a striker from Dundee United in a deal worth £750,000, has proven to been very versatile playing in wider positions in addition to through the middle. That could be a factor in Slade’s pursuit of the player with the club already having Joe Mason, Kenwyne Jones, Eoin Doyle, Frederico Macheda, Alex Revell and Adam Le Fondre all signed as strikers, it could well be that he opts to use Russell as a winger.
