The inside track on Cardiff City signing Sammy Ameobi... from our Newcastle United expert

Wed 8th July 2015

By Gareth Rogers

As football editor at ChronicleLive, Mark Douglas knows Sammy Ameobi better than most. He spills the beans on what Cardiff City fans can expect from their new signing

But will they miss him on Tyneside?
No

What sort of player is Sammy Ameobi?
He's inconsistent at Premier League level and his biggest problem was he's clearly got talent and he could be excellent but it didn't happen enough for him.

To be honest, most Newcastle fans will be glad to see the back of him but I think that's a bit harsh because he could make an impact on his day.

Alan Pardew loved Sammy and said he would play for England one day and was sure the top clubs would be chasing him eventually. :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

He prefers to play out wide but can drop into a number 10 role if needed.

He's strong and has quick feet and is best utilised as an out-and-out winger. :thumbright: :thumbright: Don't expect him to do too much defending though!

Why didn't he reach those heights then?
He just didn't kick on from where he was in the first half of the 2011/12 season.

He made his debut at Man City and even though Newcastle lost 3-1, he had a good game.

In the first six months of that season he played well and the club went on to finish fifth in the Premier League.

But after that, there was a suggestion that he'd thought he had made it before he had, Alan Pardew certainly seemed to think that was the case.

I think he struggled with all the expectation on him.

Where did it all go wrong?
In 2012 he played in the Europa League team and there was one horrible night in Bordeux in the December when he was pulled off at half time of a 2-0 defeat – he was awful! :o :o

After that game Alan Pardew told Sammy he would be sending him out on loan and to be honest he looked disappointed after the game.

He went on loan to Middlesbrough in January 2013 and started well there before coming back without ever really impressing in the Championship.

Why wasn't he released at that point?
To be honest, when he came back from Middlesbrough we all thought that was it for him. :o

But injuries gave him a chance to win his place back, even though most fans had forgotten he was even there.

He came up with some good cameos too, showing himself to be a really skilful player from time to time.

Last year he had a decent season, playing in a very bad team.

He played 15 games and scored goals against Tottenham and Hull that reminded everybody that he could still play.
That's what earned him a two-year deal.

So how will he do at Championship level?
He would be a good addition to any Championship squad, with his skill and tricky feet. :thumbright: :thumbright: :thumbright:

He is strong at running at defences and even though he seemed to lose his confidence in terms of flying past people, he's a dangerous attacker who knows where the net is.

Defending has never been his strong point though and Alan Pardew always demanded that he do more.

His body mass has increased in the last year and he's now stronger than he's ever been.

His lack of power was part of his problem when he was younger, so this could help him develop into a Premier League player.

Will the Newcastle fans miss him
Most fans are probably glad to be seeing the back of him at the moment because he was such a frustrating player.

But he's just signed a two-year deal and nobody is writing him off yet. Newcastle never sign lots of players so those who come back from loans always have a chance.

If he has a good season at Cardiff, he could come back but it's more likely they would cash in on him.

I think part of the reason he was given a two-year deal is that the club feel he is an saleable asset.

Since Pardew left, they went downhill. Pardew rates him, thats a strong enough word for me :thumbright:

Let's be honest, if he was a consistent performer at Premier League level we would never have been able to sign him on loan.

Let's give the lad a chance and our support so that hopefully he can turn that undoubted talent into becoming a consistent performer.

Perhaps a good comparison for us oldies would be Dave bennett nevr good enough for man city at the time?
Then went on to Coventry as a premier league and outstanding player.

Hopefully a new start and better shape and fitness as well as championship football can get him putting some good consistent performances in for us. Sammy do the :ayatollah:

He sounds like another 'potential player'. Hopefully now is the season he shows it.
The article how good is sammy ameobi in the Western mail is interesting- suprised it's not on here.

All the coaches are very uncommittal about him, which is a bit worrying. Only his Mother gives him a really good report!
Overall though sounds like a decent signing, although committing to playing him every game is worrying - gonna make or break our season.

Sounds like another Zaha/Ravell to me. Has the potential but could be shit.
Time will tell.

The Premier league started in 1992
