Nigeria-born Sammy Ameobi has said he hopes to prove himself again at Cardiff City, who he has joined on a season-long loan from Newcastle United.

"I came here to play, add creativity and hopefully excite the Cardiff City supporters,” Ameobi told the Cardiff website.

“I'm delighted to be here with the boys and straight into training. I can't wait to get started."

Ameobi signs new Newcastle deal

The 23-year-old forward, who has represented England at various age-grade levels but will now wish to star for Nigeria, joined Cardiff City on loan after he signed a new two-year deal with Newcastle United.

Cardiff City coach Russell Slade is happy to have Ameobi in his team.

"It’s about being patient and getting the right players into your Football Club,” Slade said.

"It’s always about quality – of player and character – rather than quantity.

“We bided our time and now we’re delighted to get our man in Sammy. He’s a fantastic addition to this squad.”

Slade recruiting this way will ensure he will bring in the right players to improve us. It also explains why Slade was able to assemble his Leyton Orient squad with 30 free transfers to get within a penalty shootout of the Championship, on the lowest budget within the whole of the football league. I will look forward to seeing who else Slade will bring to our club this summer, with the correct quality and character.

If he produces the same level of performance that he did against us for Boro he will be a great signing. Question marks over his consistency but it's a big big season for him
