A forum for all things Cardiff City
Tue Jul 07, 2015 8:34 pm
I've recently just graduated from uni with a 2:1 degree in Civil Engineering and have applied for every job out there that I'm qualified for. Had a few phone calls back from multiple companies and recruitment agencies, but have all failed to get back to me due to a lack of experience.
It's my fault for not looking into internships during university really and looks like it's biting me in the ass big time, as everyone is rejecting me due to no experience in this industry. Even graduate roles need it, so I am kind of screwed.
I've emailed dozens of companies for unpaid experience but that seems to be going nowhere too. I know a football forum is not the best place to look for advice but was crossing my fingers to see if anyone on here is involved in civil engineering and can give some advice or help. It would be really appreciated

Firstly, congratulations on the 2:1 fella.
Secondly, go abroad and apply for graduate schemes abroad or directly. There is lots of opportunity on the continent. The UK market is massively saturated as well, and the wages are pretty poor when you factor in the cost of living and house prices. I'm sure you want to get on the ladder at some point.
Any youngsters now with a degree would be best off heading abroad.

Thanks a lot mate. There's plenty going on abroad, but ideally it would be in Wales, but there is nothing going on. It's only the experience that's the bother, and I can't even get unpaid work for a month or two. Added that many employers can't even be bothered to reply to a simple email.

Yeah, applied for their graduate scheme. Completed about 3 online tests, then got rejected sadly. It's a pity really, my dissertation was based on the railways.

There's other ways to get in,their vacancies list is on the web

If I were you I would apply directly for jobs available. The number of loopholes they make you jump through for graduate schemes is ridiculous. The civil service, secret services, investment banking and legal schemes are the worst ones. You could have earned thousands in a job obtained directly by the time a graduate gets through the scheme.

I've applied for them recently and a Cardiff fan (may be on here) who works for them handed my CV to a number of departments. I have had a phone call off their recruitment team and I'm expecting to hear off them soon, but it was said that graduate opportunities have mainly been filled. Haven't applied for Dawnus, but a family friend who works for them as a QS has handed my CV in, but nothing yet.

Do not give your CV to people to hand in for you. The best thing you can do is phone, ask who is in charge of recruitment and email your CV through to them directly. Loads of people say they'll hand it in, it gets so far through the line and someone bins it because they don't want up and coming youngsters like yourself nabbing their job or putting their job at risk. By going direct to recruitment, you remove this risk.

Good point, probably best to do it myself

I will be fair though, with WSP, I applied months ago with no word back, but as soon as someone internally handed it in, get a phone call in the same week.
