*Looking for work*

Tue Jul 07, 2015 9:10 am

I'm looking to get back into work as I'm a full time dad & bringing my daughter up alone. I have to find work around school hours which is tough. Its very frustrating & i just wish to be working again soon. I apply for so many but still nothing comes of it. When will it end.

I feel for you mate I really do.

However, the odds on finding a job increase the more you apply, eventually something will turn up. Also if I were you I wouldn't mention anything about being a single parent to a prospective employer. Put your self in their shoes they are looking for someone to fill a vacancy first and foremost and they have no interest in your domestic circumstances which they may view negatively.

Basically it comes down to making yourself the most attractive option so if they ask for the world then claim you can deliver it!

Just think of it like this. If you have to apply for 100 jobs to get one (1% chance), and you have already applied for 50 and been unsuccesful, your odds are now down to 1 in 50 applications(2 % chance) to be succesful. So already your chances have improved (even doubled). You also have more experience of applying for work and what to do/say and what not to do/say.

Good luck and keep going.

Most companies, even the larger ones have cut back on local Hr staff and use employment agencies to hire and recruit, even test people for jobs. try one of them, my son and father in law have had more success using that route. Good luck

I used the numbers as an example of a way of explaining it. What I am saying is that as long as you keep trying, every job rejection is one closer to a job acceptance. So don't get too down hearted as eventually a job will get offered, and you may have to go through a lot of rejections first.

well with the greatest of respect using 1% and 2% isn't really a good example whatsoever :laughing6:

Can you access Breakfast and After School Cubs at your daughter's school? This will increase the number of hours you can work and may make finding a job a bit easier? Have you friends or relatives who could help out with childcare?
If you're claiming Income Support or Jobseeker's Allowance then speak with your adviser who will be able to illustrate what "In-work" benefits you'll be entitled to (eg. Working Tax Credits). You may then also qualify for 70% of any formal childcare costs to be covered.
