Cardiff can offer the 23-year-old regular Championship football and are among the leading contenders to snap him up
Name, age
Samuel Oluwaseyi J. "Sammy" Ameobi, 23-years-old.
Background
The son of a Nigerian academic and pastor who studied for a PhD in Newcastle, Ameobi was born in the city and joined the Toon's Academy in July 2008 after finishing school, following in the footsteps of brother Shola.
He made his reserve team debut on September 29 against Blackburn Rovers.
His mother Margaret said Sammy always wanted to be a footballer and joked he would go on to become even better than his older sibling.
She said: "He (Sammy) always said he was going to be a footballer, he’s never changed.
"Right from primary school he said ‘I’m going to be a footballer’ and he joked that he would be better than his brother."
First-team breakthrough
Sammy made his debut for the senior side in May 2011 after coming on as a second-half substitute against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in a 2-2 draw aged just 19.
With brother Shola already on the pitch, they became the first brothers to play for the Magpies in a league match since Ted and George Robledo in 1952.
He scored his first competitive goal in August 2011, after firing the winner in extra time against Scunthorpe in a second round League Cup tie.
In November of 2011 he signed a new three-and-a-half year contract extension at St James' Park up until 2015.
Sammy went out on loan in 2013 with Middlesbrough, playing 10 matches and scoring one goal which actually came against Cardiff City in a 2-1 win for the Teessiders at the Riverside.
His first Premier League goal came last season and it was an historic one - it was the fastest scored by a substitute in open play. It came within seven seconds of half-time when he came on against Spurs in a 2-1 win in October.
He followed that with a stunning strike from distance in a 3-0 win at Hull in January. Alongside those two goals, he was cautioned three times in 27 appearances last season.
What type of player is he?
Much like Shola, Sammy has bags of pace but he is a far more tricky opponent with a bag of tricks which makes him an unpredictable opponent.
In an interview in 2011, Sammy said: "I'm more of a technical player. "I like to get on the ball and run at defenders."
Amazing Sammy Ameobi skill:
Shola himself in a separate interview declared his younger brother had more natural talent.
"I can safely say he's got a lot more ability than I've got," he said.
International honours
Ameobi has represented both Nigeria and England at youth level but has declared for Nigeria at full level.
He had joined the Nigeria U20 squad ahead of the 2011 African Youth Championship and appeared in two friendly games against Saudi Arabia and Egypt.
In November 2011, though, he was called up to the England U21 squad for matches against Iceland and Belgium by Stuart Pearce.
He made his England U21 debut against Iceland in a 5–0 win and later made his first start against Belgium. He has opted to represent Nigeria but has yet to appear for the Super Eagles' senior team.
"It wasn't a difficult decision because I decided to follow my heart and I think it's the right thing to do," he said, speaking over his decision.
"I saw Shola at the World Cup and for him to play at a major tournament like that is a big motivation."
Who else has been interested in Ameobi?
Wolves, West Brom, Everton and Burnley were all said to be interested in Ameobi in May while back in February it was reported David Moyes' Real Sociedad were in talks over a shock move for him.
Ameobi was out of contract with Newcastle at the end of the season but has been made a new offer in the meantime. Details of that deal having been signed are unclear.
In a statement on their website recently, Newcastle said: "Newcastle United forward Sammy Ameobi has been offered a new contract at St. James' Park.
"The 23-year-old, who sees his current deal expire at the end of June, made 25 appearances in the Barclays Premier League last season."
