The England under-21 international is out of contract with his home city club this month= but looks set to agree a new deal and then go out on a season-long loan.

Cardiff City have made a bold bid to sign winger Sammy Ameobi from Newcastle United.

The Geordie pace ace is out of contract with his home city club this month, but looks set to agree a new deal and then go out on a season-long loan.

Cardiff can offer the 23-year-old regular Championship football and are among the leading contenders to snap up the England under-21 international.

A number of Premier League clubs were linked with moves to sign Ameobi, including West Brom, Crystal Palace, Wolves and Everton, but none of them followed up with a firm offer.

Spanish club Real Sociedad, where former Everton manager David Moyes is in charge, were also thought to be considering an offer, but now it looks likely Ameobi will commit to Newcastle on a new deal.

Would Sammy Ameobi be a good signing for Cardiff?

YES
NO

He has made 66 first team appearances, scoring four goals, while he had a loan spell with Middlesbrough during 2013.

Cardiff manager Russell Slade made a double swoop for Ameobi and Hull central midfield player Stephen Quinn, who, it seems, has opted to sign for Championship rivals Reading.

Slade is still keen to add an experienced central midfield player to his squad, while he hopes to persuade Ameobi that Cardiff City is the club to join on loan for 2015-16.

newcastle made a low contract offer because rules state players under contract at under the age of 24 if not offered a new deal can leave on a free. if offered a new deal (no matter how low) then thy are entitled to compensation.
im a fan of Ameobi but Newcastle fans was angry he got offered a new deal. sticking point on on this deal maybe the compensation package if he signs for us and not them. cant see point of signing a 1yr deal with them and then us loaning him for the year

Ameobi seems to have been around for a while and not set the world alight. Is he any better than what we have got?

He has Premiership experience but I would rather see Kennedy and Kadeem given a chance.

I would be happy if this happens. At least it's someone who has potential and not a conference player who we have never heard of. :D :bluebird:

Why on a loan when his contact is almost up?

Because the expectation was that he would sign a new deal at Newcastle and they'd loan him out to us or somebody else!

In reality though, it appears that Newcastle have only offered him a new deal, as they will get compensation from any UK club who sign him up, as he is under 24 years of age!

In essence, it seems that he isn't really wanted at Newcastle and they may well have offered him a derisory deal, merely to get compensation!
